Online marketing techniques
In the last article we discussed the importance of building an effective online presence. In this follow-up article I will look at three essential marketing techniques for promoting your business online.
Pay-per-click advertising:
"If you build it, they might not come" is very true for a website. You need to spend as much time on promoting your website as you do building it. This may start with some initial search engine optimisation and signing up to online directories to ensure you are found on Google, but consider also adding a pay-per-click campaign to your strategy.
There are many advantages to a pay-per-click campaign: it brings in immediate results and gives you the ability to see which keywords are performing and tweak the campaign instantly to make it more effective.
Using the Google Keyword Tool, work out what keywords bring you traffic and those to use in your pay-per-click campaign. You can also use Wordstream, which gives you more information and I think is better than Google's keyword tool.
The key tip for getting value for money is to set a very restrictive budget. Don't set the budget that Google tells you to set. Set something you are comfortable with. Then, monitor your campaign closely to see if it brings the results you want.
While Google dominates advertising online with Google AdWords, it is not the only medium. Now you can advertise using pay-per-click campaigns in LinkedIn and Facebook. Both are more affordable than Adwords and might be a more relevant medium depending on your audience.
Email marketing:
Email marketing is an important part of online marketing and often overlooked by small businesses. Customers need to be reminded you are out there, and email marketing is the way to do it. E-newsletters are not considered to bespam if a) they contain valuable information; and b) you always provide an opt-out or unsubscribe function.
To run an email marketing campaign you first need a list of contacts. You can start with your existing customers but often small businesses aren't in the habit of collecting names, emails, mobile numbers and so on. Note to self: it's time to start!
Include a form on the landing page of your website with an attractive offer that encourages people to sign up, and you will kick-start the lead-generation process.
Next, use a safe and secure email program such as Mailchimp to send out email marketing. Mailchimp offers great social sharing tools and analytics but there are many other tools out there, including some fully automated marketing software such as Infusionsoft or Hubspot. The important thing is make sure your email marketing campaign gets results by making the content stand out.
Social media marketing:
Social media marketing is the next level of online marketing for micro business owners. Many have started to play with Facebook, Twitter or blogging but without any real strategy. So how do you know which medium will work for you?
Facebook is more geared towards the consumer environment. Retail businesses can use it to make offers and run contests. Having said that it is a great engagement tool for local businesses to share content and build an online community.
Having a blog can position you as an authority in your industry and can gain you credibility amongst your peers and customers.
For service-based businesses, I find a blog combined with email marketing and a PR strategy very effective; while a Facebook, Twitter and social interaction strategy is more effective for a retail business.
The important thing in social media marketing is to monitor the conversation on every platform. This can be daunting for the micro business owner, so I suggest only engaging those tools you are going to manage and use every day and that are appropriate to your business. If your business is in human resources, for example, it is better to be committed to LinkedIn and leverage that as a forum rather than be on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
Choose where your audience is and go there. I also recommend using social network monitoring tools such sproutsocial, which helps to track your brand on social media.
Rather than take on all of these techniques at once, start with one and do it well. The real measure of effective online marketing is whether your leads, contacts, new opportunities and returning customers increase.

US film, music industries roll out anti-piracy program
WASHINGTON — A new “copyright alert” system has begun rolling out this week in the United States in an effort to curb online piracy.
The system, informally known as “six strikes,” is a voluntary effort of the music and film industries, with the largest Internet service providers participating.
The program will use warnings and could result in slowed or suspended Internet connections, but users will not lose Web access entirely. Still, some civil liberties groups and Internet activists call it too invasive and warn it could unfairly penalize some users.
It is being coordinated by the Center for Copyright Information, created by the music and cinema industries and the five largest broadband Internet firms.
“We hope this cooperative, multi-stakeholder approach will serve as a model for addressing important issues facing all who participate in the digital entertainment ecosystem,” said Jill Lesser, executive director of the center.
Lesser said the program is “meant to educate rather than punish, and direct (consumers) to legal alternatives.”
She added that people who believe they get warnings in error will have “an easy to use process” to appeal, and get an independent review.
Despite the “six strikes” moniker, backers of the system say it is not intended to cut off Internet access for copyright infringers, who will get up to six warnings.
The steps announced by the big Internet firms include pop-ups, which force users to acknowledge warnings, and mechanisms to slow a user’s access to near-dialup speeds.
Some critics say that redirecting users is equivalent to a “browser hijack” while others say innocent users may be snared by the system.
“It’s an elaborate surveillance system,” said Corynne McSherry at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group.
“There will be innocent people caught up in this system, it’s inevitable.”
McSherry said another problem is a “lack of transparency” in the system, which is private and cannot be challenged in the same way as a law.
“We have an elaborate private enforcement system for copyright, because they weren’t happy with what they could get from Congress,” she said.
Internet subscribers “face consequences based on nothing more than an accusation,” McSherry said.
Other activists were even more blunt in their criticism.
“Soon your ISP will be spying on you and messing with your internet at Hollywood’s request,” said a tweet from the online activist group Fight for the Future.
The group said that under new system, “they can slow down or shut off your internet connection without any due process, claiming copyright infringement.”
But the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a Washington think tank, called the program “a model for addressing digital property rights without unduly inhibiting Internet use and innovation.”
Participating in the program are the five largest broadband Internet providers — Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T, Cablevision and Verizon — covering some 85 percent of US residential customers.
The firms this week began releasing details of their enforcement.
Comcast said on its website its “progressive alerts will start out as informational and then evolve into ‘mitigation alerts’” which require customers to call the company, but that the program will not involve “termination.”
Verizon said it will implement “temporary Internet speed reductions of two or three days for customers who receive at least five alerts.”
Cablevision said it “may temporarily suspend your Internet access for a set period of time” for repeat violators.
AT&T said customers would “be required to take an extra step to review materials on an online portal that will educate them on the distribution of copyrighted content online” but also stressed its privacy protections.
AT&T vice president Ben Olson added that even though its measures are voluntary, “many customers will respond positively when first notified and will not need additional reminders.”

You’ve got Mail! AOL launches new Alto mail program
The company that brought mail to the masses has taken a new look at email -- and hopes to once again revolutionize the inbox.
AOL’s Alto is a free new service that works with your existing Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, AOL Mail and .Mac account (sorry, Hotmail users, Microsoft's service doesn't support the necessary IMAP standard). It sifts through the mile-high stack that is your inbox and automatically sorts the thousands of messages piled up there into “stacks” -- photos, attachments, daily deals and so on -- in order to make it all far more accessible.
After all, email isn’t just email any more, said David Temkin, AOL’s senior vice president of mail.
“The nature of the medium has completely changed,” he told FoxNews.com.
He’s right, of course; what was once simply a digital way to write your aunt Flo in Tulsa is now how we get catalogs, pass photographs to our family, read the news and more. And with all that junk in your inbox trunk, the modern email account has not 10 or 20 personal letters to family and friends but thousands or even tens of thousands of things.
If you’ve ever missed an email from your sister under that deluge, you’ll find Alto a wonderful answer to the problem.
“The way we use email has changed radically over the years, but the core email application experience hasn’t,” said Joshua Ramirez, senior director of product for AOL Mail. Gmail, Yahoo, and everything else is at heart one big list, he said. Alto is different.
When you first enroll, Alto takes an hour or two to read your mail, sorting it into those stacks like a digital mailman. It reads the metadata embedded in your pictures to sort them by date. It associates the people emailing you with their Facebook account, since that message from Shelia is from the same person who posted that pie recipe on Twitter.
Temkin assured FoxNews.com that the company respected privacy concens. AOL doesn’t send any information back to its databases, he said, or even save copies of your messages on its servers.
Once sorted, the program presents you not with the boring list you’re familiar with but a few elegant piles. And creating new ones is simple enough -- any emails from Steve and Jim at the office can be automatically sent to one. Statements from your bank and credit card company? Straight to another.
Alto’s layout is beautiful, too, with tall, elegant fonts and subtle coloring; use it for a few minutes and the utilitarian inbox you had before will become the silliest thing you’ve ever used. I have how many messages? Which ones are important? Where’s the beef?
“We built Alto for people who believe, as we do, that organization is beautiful, who are overloaded with email and aren’t happy with the status quo of existing email experiences,” said Joshua Ramirez, senior director of product for AOL Mail.
The app is far from perfect, of course. There’s no way to tweak the contents of the photos folder, for example, so you’ll likely find irrelevant images among the good stuff. And a “Top Stories” stack is meant as interface to your favorite news sites; at present, however, it’s largely a way to feed you Huffington Post headlines. The people page is neat, but only supports Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn at present.
Plus it’s a limited beta release, at present; visit www.altomail.com and you might be allowed to try it out.
But the app has great potential. And for anyone suffering under inbox overload, give it a shot. It’s enough to make you glad you’ve got mail. Again.

Chase, NYSE Websites Targeted in Cyber Attacks
J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM: 41.25, -0.09, -0.22%) and NYSE Euronext (NYX) experienced website trouble Wednesday after being targeted by apparent cyber attacks. The problems come a day after Bank of America experienced prolonged issues following a separate attack.
Flashpoint Partners, an intelligence gathering network specializing in cyber threats, said it believes the Chase outage is "likely due to a sustained denial of service attack." A Flashpoint analyst told FOX Business the attack was probably caused by "a large botnet," a tactic commonly used by hacking group Anonymous. Generally, botnets function by controlling a large number of computers that have been compromised without the knowledge of the machine's owner.
Flashpoint also said that the website of NYSE Euronext’s (NYX: 25.85, -0.26, -1.00%) New York Stock Exchange is subject to a cyber attack from a group called "SaudiAnonymous1." This attack, the Flashpoint analyst said, utilized a different type of denial-of-service tool called a "webhive."
A person familiar with the matter told FOX Business a small number of users in the U.S. had trouble accessing NYSE.com Wednesday in a situation that lasted about an hour. The person said the problem was not widespread and did not impact any of the exchange operator's trading systems. It was unclear as to whether the apparent cyber attack caused the connectivity issues. At 5:30 p.m. ET, the Big Board's website was readily accessible.
A spokesman from NYSE Euronext said the exchange has a policy against commenting on "security matters."
Against this backdrop, a financial-services industry group raised its threat level to “high” from “elevated” on Wednesday, citing "recent credible intelligence."
The Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center warned of the potential for DDoS and other cyber attacks against financial institutions and said members should "maintain a heightened level of awareness," apply all appropriate updates and "ensure constant diligence in monitoring and quick response to any malicious events."
Users attempting to log onto Chase.com were greeted with an error screen, blocking their access to their online bank accounts, though as of about 5 p.m. ET the site appeared to be working properly.
New York-based J.P. Morgan confirmed it was suffering from website issues, saying on its official support Twitter account that Chase.com has been hit by “intermittent issues.” It added, “We’re working to restore full connectivity & apologize for any inconvenience.”
Sitedown.co, which lists website outages, started recording reports of outages on Chase.com as early as 9:21 a.m. ET.
It’s not clear if Chase's website problems are directly tied to the issues that caused slowness and intermittent outages of Bank of America’s website a day earlier. A source confirmed to FOX Business on Tuesday that BofA was hit by a cyber attack focused on its domain name service infrastructure.
However, J.P. Morgan wasn’t named in a threat posted online by a group called “Izz ad-din Al quassam Brigades” that claimed responsibility for the BofA attack and also promised to attack the website of NYSE.
The group claims to be allied with Muslims and was expressing anger over a recent YouTube video mocking Islam. However, there is no way to confirm that this group is indeed Islamic or tied to the terrorist group Izz ad-din Al quassam.
J.P. Morgan didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Shares of J.P. Morgan closed up 0.19% to $41.34. NYSE Euronext shares edged up 0.23% to $26.11.

PH ranks No. 32 in global index on impact of the Web

SWEDEN is best in the world at putting the Web to work, ahead of the United States and the United Kingdom, according to a new global study launched by Tim Berners-Lee on behalf of the Web Foundation.
Out of the 61 developed and developing countries surveyed in The Web Index, the Philippines placed No. 32, with an overall score of 46.8, or barely half the perfect score of 100.
The Philippines scored 48.4 for “web impact,” 48.3 for “web readiness,” and 39.4 for web content, connectivity infrastructure, and web use.
Of the member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), only Singapore (No.11) bested the Philippines.
However, Manila outranked Indonesia (No.34), Thailand (No.37), and Vietnam (No.47). Five other ASEAN members, namely Malaysia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, and Brunei were not included in the Index’s first-year run.
Designed and produced by the World Wide Web Foundation, the Web Index is “the world’s first multidimensional measure of the Web’s growth, utility, and impact on people and nations.”
The 61 countries surveyed were assessed using primary and secondary data sources on the political, economic, and social impact of the Web, as well as for indicators of Web connectivity, infrastructure, web content, and web use. The study focused on available data as of 2011.
The Index measured and ranked the countries according to:
- “Web Readiness” or “the quality and extent of Communications Infrastructure (facilitating connectivity to the Web) and Institutional Infrastructure (policies regulating Web access and skill and educational levels enabling the full benefit of the Web).”
- “Web Use” or Web usage within countries (such as the percentage of individuals who use the Internet) and the content available to these Web users.”
- “Web Impact” assessed through social, economic and political indicators, including measures of social networks, business Internet use, and e-participation.
The Web Foundation said it will now start publishing Index every year to allow for “comparisons of trends over time and the benchmarking of performance across countries, continuously improving our understanding of the Web’s value for humanity.”
A press dispatch on the study said “the Web remains a largely untapped resource in much of the world, with only 1 in 3 people using it globally and fewer than 1 in 6 in Africa.”
The Index reveals that high broadband prices and trends toward censorship are major barriers to making the Web useful to all, the statement added.
The study showed that “almost 30 per cent of countries covered by the Index face moderate to severe government restrictions on access to websites, while about half of them show increasing threats to press freedom.”
“The Web is a global conversation. Growing suppression of free speech, both online and offline, is possibly the single biggest challenge to the future of the Web,” warned Berners-Lee.
The study noted that in most countries surveyed, “broadband connections still cost almost half of monthly income per capita.”
Berners-Lee was quoted in the statement as saying that “the high price of connectivity is stopping billions of people from achieving their rights to knowledge and participation. Costs have got to come down dramatically.”
Outside the member-states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development or OECD, “the growth of successful Web-based businesses remains surprisingly poor… showing that the Web’s economic potential is also going untapped in many countries.”
Nonetheless, the positive findings from the Index include the spread of e-governance or “government data and services being made available to citizens online, as well as initiatives to encourage online participation in decision-making.”
The study showed that middle-income countries “are improving their e-governance capacities faster than the West, with Korea, Singapore and Colombia among the world’s top innovators in this sphere.”
After Sweden, the US, and the UK, the other countries on the Top 10 list of The Web Index are, in order of ranking: Canada, Finland, Switzerland, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, and Ireland.
Yemen landed last on the list (No.61) with a score of zero, after Zimbabwe’s 1.9 (No.60).
The other countries on the Bottom 10 list of the Web Index, by ascending order of rank, are Burkina Faso, Benin, Ethiopia, Namibia, Bangladesh, Mali, Cameroon, and Nepal.
“Since its invention by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, and its subsequent explosive growth,” the study noted that “the World Wide Web has had a profound impact on humanity. This impact is evolving continuously with the creation of new content, connectivity software and infrastructure.”
“Although the Web has been an important catalyst of social, political and economic change over the past two decades, its impact — both negative and positive—has been unevenly felt both within and across countries,” it added.
The Web Index report was written by Hania Farhan of the Web Foundation, and Debra D’Agostino and Henry Worthington of Oxford Economics.
Oxford Economics assisted in the production of the Index, and played a central role in econometrics work. Global Integrity set up and implemented the Expert Assessment survey via their Indaba platform.
Two consultative bodies provided valuable advice: The Web Index Steering Group and the Web Index Science Council.
The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism served as country researcher for the Philippines.

Double your Website Traffic in Forums

Do you need more traffic to your web site, and more sales? If you do, then you need to consider an often neglected side of web site promotion which is called forum marketing.
Most web sites make use of forums to provide the element of response from user to owner and vice versa. These forums take many forms, and include the standard forums, discussion boards, bulletin boards and currently blogs where the visitors to the web site can leave their comments on the site.
Marketing has always revolved around relationships. The basic element of relationship from the aspect of online marketing is to weave an element of trust between the potential purchaser and the vendor or web site owner. Once there is this element of trust, even the tiniest bond that has been sown between the potential buyer and seller, it becomes easier for the potential buyer to take a further step to buy the product. That is why many marketers are establishing forum boards and blogs to interact with clients and to provide support and to answer queries.
These forum boards provide a fertile ground for you to test out forum marketing for your products.
You need to compile a list of the discussion boards and blogs that are related to your product or service line that you are going to market. Then on a daily basis, visit these forums to read their postings. These forums are the best sites where newbies to internet marketing would congregate to seek free resources, or request information or advice from more experienced forumers. When you see a post where you can respond, make a brief informative post, and more importantly make sure you leave a reference to your web site in your signature line. This confers on you two advantages. Firstly, you gain a backlink to your site when you leave your website address in a much visited forum, and secondly, forumers who read your post will tend to visit your web site by following the link in your post.
Some internet marketers channel all their visitors to a squeeze page and not to a sales website directly. This squeeze page is a sign up page where you get the email address of the visitor in return for a free download of a ebook or report or software. By using this squeeze page, you gain targeted leads.
Statistics show a potential buyer would need to be exposed at least 3 to 5 times before he becomes interested to take the next step to purchase anything from you. By getting his email, you can email him on a regular schedule or use an autoresponder to channel your marketing message across.
The most important part of forum marketing is to identify a group of marketing forums and blogs related to your product or services that you are selling, from which you can then launch off. Once you have the list of forums and discussion boards, it becomes a daily affair to spend enough time to visit these forums and to post to them. Beware though, forum reading can be addictive, and you can be spending a whole lot of time on reading and posting to forums. Track your leads, and as you continue to do your forum posting daily, you will see a steady increase in your web site traffic and your sales.

Online sharing, how much is too much?

NEW YORK — Whether it is photos, personal status or unwanted comments, most Americans think people ‘overshare’ personal information online and a third admit not everything they post is true.
A survey for Intel Corporation on mobile etiquette and digital sharing showed that 90 percent of Americans think too much is being divulged, and nearly half feel overwhelmed by all the all the data that is out there.
One in five of the 2,008 people questioned by Ipsos Observer for Intel admitted that some of what they post is false.
“People are still sorting through what does it means to share, who is the audience you are sharing with, what do those audiences want and how do they feel about things?” said Dr Genevieve Bell, the director of user interaction and experience at Intel Labs.
“Those are the things that are really fluid. We are still sorting it out both at a personal level and a cultural level.”
For many, sharing online with smartphones, laptops, notebooks and tablets is easier than in person. A third of people admitted they were more comfortable with digital sharing than face to face, and a quarter said they had a different personality online.
About 85 percent of Americans post information online and a quarter do it every day, according to the survey. For 65 percent of U.S. adults, sharing makes them feel closer to family and friends and nearly half said it they didn’t communicate online they wouldn’t know what is going on with those near and dear to them.
But the wealth of digital information can also be annoying.
Most U.S. adults said they are vexed by people who complain constantly and similar numbers found posting inappropriate or explicit photos and private information bothersome.
Bell said the results of the poll show people are still having difficulty dealing with technology.
“The fact that people are still grappling with how to balance the benefits of mobile technology with the downsides – this means we all still have those moments of poor mobile manners,” she explained.
More than 80 percent of people in the poll said they think mobile manners are getting worse, a jump from 72 percent a year ago.
Texting while driving, talking loudly on a cell phone in a public place and having the volume too loud were the top three misbehaviors citied in the survey.
Etiquette expert Anna Post also questioned whether a person’s entire social network wants to know what they had for dinner and if it is appropriate to have three different dating profiles online.
“Sharing and getting together online are integral parts of building and maintaining relationships,” she said in a statement. “But we’re still finding our way when it comes to determining the most appropriate behavior in any given situation online.”
Most Americans are also convinced that what is posted online, stays online. Yet 27 percent said there is very little they would not share digitally.
