Vinnie Paul says he is happier with how Hellyeah is run as a
band as opposed to Pantera – which he says became more like a business.

The drummer says the fun of being in a group is eradicated by the
business aspect, but adds that supergroup Hellyeah hasn't yet reached
that stage.

Paul is joined in Hellyeah by Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray, as well as
Tom Maxwell and Kyle Sanders. He insists he is proud of what Pantera
achieved but that his energy is now solely focused on Hellyeah.

Vinnie tells Metal-Rules:
"You know, it's a good legacy to have but people do have to realise
that that was then and this is now. A lot of people get hung up on
living in the past and I'm not doing that. I'm living for today and for
tomorrow.

"What I did back then was amazing, it was great and I'm hoping to
achieve that again with this. It's a much different day and age, it's
more difficult and harder, but I'm willing to do it.

"When you're in a band like Mudvayne or Pantera, they turn into a
business after a while and the fun goes away from it because it's a lot
of fucking work.

"I try telling people all the time — try being married to one person
for any length of time, much less four or five other guys in the band,
and you know that's what it's like. You really have to learn give and
take and how things work."

Hellyeah released fourth album Blood For Blood this year, but almost quit before recording began due to an atmosphere described as "toxic." It resulted in the sacking of Greg Tribbett and Bob Zilla, who were replaced by Maxwell and Sanders.
A
total of 88 rare recordings by Jimi Hendrix will be remastered and

The tracks were recorded between 1965-1967 during Hendrix’s stint
with Curtis Knight And The Squires, a New York-based R&B act.

Following recent reports that AC/DC have begun recording, with Stevie Young filling in for his uncle Malcolm, It's now looking like the band will also tour before the end of the year.

Frontman Brian Johnson dropped the hint in a message posted to his motor racing website, in which he thanked fans for supporting his motoring TV show 'Cars That Rock'.

The message reads:

"Hello everyone, i just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words about Cars That Rock. Your encouragement means a lot to me.

Carlos Santana says Neal Schon chased him like a "guided
missile" for 18 months over a reunion project – and the resulting music
will be "Filthy McNasty."

Schon
found fame as a member of Santana when he joined in 1971, at the age of
15. He appeared on their second and third albums alongside vocalist and
keyboardist Gregg Rolie, before the pair left to form Journey in 1973.

But he's been talking up a new project for some time, and now Santana has told how it came about.

He tells Artisan News: "Neil pursued me like a guided missile for
about a year and a half. Everywhere I went he was there: 'Carlos,
everything about me tells me that I need to do this thing with you.' I'm
like, 'What?'

"Next thing I know I said, 'Neil, I appreciate your diligence. I'm
going to do something with you. But let's invite Gregg Rolie, Michael
Shrieve and Michael Carabello – let's get the original Santana band who
did the first three albums, and call it Santana IV."

Schon recently discussed how initial rehearsals and songwriting sessions had gone well, telling Something Else:
"Musically, there’s nothing that we can’t jump on top of and make it
sound really good, really quickly. We managed to get into the studio and
lay nine or ten ideas down. It’s smoking. It sounds like the old band."

Santana says of his thinking behind the material: "I compiled my own
playlist out of about 200 African CDs, and I go, 'Listen to this.' I
call it Filthy McNasty swamp music."

There's no confirmed schedule for the reunion project, with Santana
touring the US alongside Rod Stewart over the summer, and Schon
committed to Journey duties.
Estranged
Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward says he remains in contact with Tony
Iommi and Geezer Butler – but believes he's lost the friendship of Ozzy
Osbourne, and he's not sure how much he could trust the singer in
future.

The
band's drumstool is currently occupied by Tommy Clufetos after Ward
bowed out of the original lineup reunion, saying he hadn't been offered a
contract that was "signable."

But he says he would still be up for a return – if he felt healthy enough.

Ward tells DC Heavy Metal:
“I’ll always have an open mind to playing with Black Sabbath. I love
the band. I miss them terribly. If we can come to some terms and we’re
all okay with each other.

“The most important thing for me is being able to know that I can
play drums the way that I want to. I wouldn’t even enter into any kind
of conversation with them if I knew I wasn’t back on the mark."

However, Ward says there remains a "political agenda" attached to his
non-appearance. He says: "I have to be careful in overstating. I’ve
definitely got an open mind.

"I miss playing with Geezer, just horribly. I absolutely miss him to
death. And I miss playing with Tony just, every day. Obviously I miss
Oz. With Ozzy, I’ve lost a friend as far as I’m concerned. A man that I
dearly loved, and I still dearly love – but I’ve had to re-adjust just
how much I’m going to trust and love him.”

Meanwhile, former Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice has admitted he'd return to the band as soon as he was invited.

Asked why he feels he was overlooked after Ward dropped out in 2012, the Ronnie James Dio era sticksman tells Radio Fireball:
"We did four years with Heaven And Hell and it was Tony, Geezer and I.
If I was in Sabbath it would be Tony, Geezer, I and Ozzy. Maybe Ozzy
felt weird that way, or maybe the band felt weird, like it was Heaven
And Hell with Ozzy, and they wanted to keep it different. It could be a
number of things."

But he adds: "They know I would love to do it and I'm here for them if they need me."

Bottleneck and slide guitar playing. This is a form of guitar
playing which has been around for nearly one hundred years or more. Its
roots are embedded in the African-American negro blues music. It is
easily recognized when played by the wailing sound it makes on the
fretboard of the guitar.

Bottleneck and slide are terms often used
interchangeably for a style of guitar playing in which the strings are
"stopped" by a small metal or glass tube held in the hand or slipped
over one of the left hand fingers.

Strictly speaking, "
bottleneck" refers to glass, whereas slide refers to metal, but the
technique for playing is the same in both cases.

Slide guitar originated in America, around the Mississippi Delta

It
was predominately negro blues music. It is thought that it's roots
originated in the tradition of black slavery and therefore linked
strongly and forever to the evolution of the blues.

It is also
believed to be an expression of feelings through music and song. The
term bottleneck is derived from the fact that the earliest slides were
made from broken - off necks of beer bottles. This technique for slide
playing was the precursor to all the modern slides we now have available
in the music market place.
Using a slide is quite easy, and it is
also easy to make your own slide from the neck of a bottle, or you can
improvise a metal one from a piece of tubing. But why go through all
this bother when they are readily available in all musical instrument
retail shops, and very inexpensive.

Metal and glass produce very
distinctive different sounds, that is why most guitarist will have both
types in their guitar bag. But if you just want one, then experiment
around with both types until you are satisfied with the one that gives
you the sound you are looking for.

Wearing the slide on the finger
is also a very personal choice. It takes time to get used to wearing
the slide so you must use the finger you feel more comfortable with when
playing. Usually the third or fourth finger is the choice, but like I
said it is purely a personal decision. Just to give you a tip on which
finger might suit best, I would recommend you try the fourth finger as
this frees up the other three fingers for playing chords or individual
notes.

Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach has accused his bandmates of being “allergic to cash”.

And he’s branded their refusal to discuss a reunion as an insult to their loyal fans.

Both parties are regularly asked about the chances of getting back
together, but bassist Rachel Bolan recently attempted to end the
speculation by calling it “a waste of time”

Now Bach has responded to his comment, telling Yahoo Music:
“I go on my Twitter feed and I read things like it’s the 25th
anniversary of the first Skid Row album – and Skid Row doesn’t give a
shit.

“I would love to do something to celebrate it. My former bandmates are like, ‘Nah, we’re playing a bowling alley. We’re happy.’”

The singer says there’s “a lot of unreleased material” in the band archives which he’s sure fans would love to hear.

“I guess my band is allergic to cash,” he continues. “They’re happy
not being big. It’s such an insult to the millions of people who dig our
albums. It’s like saying: ‘We were just joking back then. Happy
anniversary!’”

Skid Row, fronted by Johnny Solinger for the past 14 years, released the first in their United World Rebellion EP series in 2013, and are currently working on the second instalment.

Meanwhile, Bach releases his new solo album, Give ‘Em Hell,
next month. He describes it as giving the fans “more of what they want
and what they expect”, adding: “I don’t see how a fan could dig Slave To The Grind and not like the album I’ve just made.”

Touching on his notoriously frank media comments, the frontman says:
“I can’t help it. I don’t censor what I say and I always end up in
trouble, but I don’t fucking care.”

The basic technique for fret tapping is relatively easy to
develop. Fret tapping is based on the hammering - on and the pulling -
off of notes - both techniques have been at the heart of rock and roll
guitar music for many years.

Once the basics have been mastered, fret tapping equips a guitarist to play impressively and sound like a professional.

He
can use this method of playing in almost any song or instrumental piece
and it will sound awesome. He should play it with a very fast tempo
which will make the sound crisp and clear.

Hammering on a note
means you impact with your left hand finger striking or "hammering" the
string and then pushing it down to make contact with the fret. This
causes the note to sound.

To execute a pull - off, instead of
lifting the finger directly off the string, the finger is moved slightly
across the string in a downward direction just before being lifted off
the string.

The right hand hammer - on, also causes a note to
sound exactly the same way as a right hand hammer - on. Although there
are many different approaches, most guitarists using this technique
prefer to rest their right hand thumb on the edge of the fretboard to
provide a steady anchor for the hand.

As the right hand moves up and down the fretboard to reach different frets, the thumb simply slides along the fretboard.

The
right hand pull off technique differs from the left hand version only
in that the slight movement of the finger across the string as it is
lifted off is in an upwards rather than in a downwards direction.

For
other approaches to fret tapping, it is also possible to use the
technique in chord playing. This is done by playing two notes on the
same string.

First hold down any chord, preferably near the top of the guitar where the nut is when you first try this technique.

The basic idea behind this is to play a right hand hammer - on and pull - off with the right hand finger on each string in turn.

By
executing the hammer - on and pull- off twelve frets above the fret for
each note of the chord, you will be playing the same notes that are
present in the chord, also the notes one octave higher.

If you are
playing a G chord and fingering the first string at the third fret and
hammering - on and pulling - off at the fifteenth fret the hammer on
sound will sound the higher G note and the pull - off will sound the G
one octave lower.

Right hand tapping opens a whole new world of
playing for the guitarist in that it increases the melodic possibilities
of the guitar.

There is fantastic information about these
techniques further down if you wish to get serious about your guitar
playing, then read on.
Ozzy Osbourne’s Buckinghamshire mansion was among the homes badly damaged during England’s recent extreme weather, he’s revealed.

Around 6000 homes were swamped by heavy rain during the wettest winter on record, with the average repair bill estimated at £30,000.

But Osbourne and wife Sharon face a payout of ten times that sum – even though they won’t be allowed to start work until the end of the year.

The Black Sabbath frontman tells the Daily Mail: “It’s been completely flooded. Nazareth have named fellow Scot Linton Osborne as the replacement for singer Dan McCafferty, who was forced to retire last year due to ill health.

The veteran outfit are gearing up to hit the road once again, while
their final album with McCafferty is due for release later this year.

Naz say in a statement: “Born in Edinburgh and raised near
Dunfermline, 41-year-old Linton has been singing and performing
professionally for as long as he can remember.

“After extensive auditions, the band was knocked out by Linton’s voice, presence and style. And he’s a thoroughly good guy! His
enthusiasm and energy has been a shot in the arm for the band – a real
boost after the sense of loss and sadness at the sudden retirement of
our dear friend and brother Dan.”

McCafferty has given his blessing to Osborne’s appointment, with the
singers sharing an interest in Little Richard and early-era rock’n'roll.

Naz have begun rehearsals for their first shows with their latest
lineup, featuring sole remaining original member Pete Agnew on bass, his
son Lee on drums and guitarist Jimmy Murrison.
Ginger Baker has launched a Pledge campaign to fund the release of a career-spanning double-disc anthology and an exclusive photo book.

The Cream icon and his family aim to mark his 75th birthday this year with the launch of A Drummer’s Tale,
with pledge points starting at £8 and running up to £95, and offers
including signed books, drumsticks and VIP access to a London concert.

Baker says on his Pledge page: “Stand by your beds everyone! It’s been over thirty years since the RSO launched The Best Of Ginger Baker anthology – without consulting me about the content!

“This time I’m in charge, with no label. I’m ready to release A Drummer’s Tale and there will also be a book full of very rare, family-owned photos and memorabilia.

“With PledgeMusic the plan is to give you something very exclusive. I
know you’ll enjoy it. Thanks for your support throughout the years –
and remember: ‘Don’t cheer, throw money!’”

The Baker family explain: “Reaching seventy-five is a milestone for
any working musician – but in the case of Ginger it’s truly worth
celebrating.”

Details of Baker’s 75th birthday concert will be announced in due course, along with details of a run of exclusive drum clinics.

The Pledge campaign has reached 13% of its goal with 97 days to run.

Gregg Allman says the Allman Brothers Band will split after celebrating their 45th anniversary during 2014.

The announcement comes after guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks both said they’d be bowing out following celebrations of the landmark date.

Singer, keyboardist and guitarist Allman hasn’t said whether his decision is related to his bandmates’ moves, but tells Relix: “This is it – this is the end of it. Forty-five years is enough, and I want to do something else anyway.”

He’s working on a solo album, with the intention of writing all of it
and bringing in a host of guest musicians to play on it. He’s also
involved in the making of a biopic based on his book My Cross To Bear, with Oscar-winning actor William Hurt in the lead role.

But as he looks back over decades since the Allman Brothers’
self-titled debut album in 1969, he won’t rule out the chances of more
performances in the future.

“Who’s to say?” he reflects. “We may get together every five years and just do one play at a time.”

Ian Astbury has compared people who create music alone in home studios rather than live with a band to those who play video games instead of being active in real life.

And the Cult frontman says he’s not sure where the idea of a “rock star” fits into the modern world, insisting the title has been hijacked by “accountants and four-year-old girls.”

Astbury is gearing up to record new music with his band, which will start with a “discovery session” in a rehearsal room, after they completed a tour on which they played 1987 album Electric in full.

He tells Esquire: “With Electric, I like the songs because they’re rooted in three chords and blues-rock elements. They’re on a dark cycle and really come from an organic force.

“They may not be current in the sense of what’s popular, but in terms of human action they’re archetypal. They’ll always be fresh.

“These songs are very physical and demand a certain amount of physicality – and that’s the one thing about live music that you’re never going to get from a bedroom production that’s a digitally-manufactured piece.

“It’s the difference between playing a fighting video game and actually punching someone.”

Astbury believes a blues connection remains essential to making rock music, which influences his speculation on what a 21st century rock star might be.

“Even a hint of soul or blues music, derivative of African-American blues, folk, spiritual, or gospel,” says the vocalist. “The original rock’n’ roll came from that well. It was meant to be played from the waist down. It wasn’t supposed to be played from the neck up.”

Which means, he says, that hip-hop artists like Kanye West and Jay Z are closer to being rock musicians than people like Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

He reflects: “Coldplay have made some wonderful records for the genre they’re involved in, but I would consider them to be more of a pop act. The music is much more cerebral than it is animalistic.

“I think hip-hop has more to do with rock’n'roll. Kanye West is, in many ways, a rock artist. Jay Z in many ways is a rock artist. In the sense that they’ve used hard rock, punk rock, psychedelic rock aesthetics and influences in their music. When you see Kanye West, he has a full band playing. Jay Z has a full band playing with Marshalls.”

He continues: “An accountant does something amazingly well on the stock exchange and his buddies high-five him – he’s a rock star. A four-year-old girl learned to ride a bicycle – she’s a rock star!

“What does that mean any more? What is the popular image of rock star? A rail-thin, overly-paid, narcissistic, average-talented individual who self-implodes in front of everybody, eternally having a party and who looks eternally youthful?

“I don’t know what it is. I do know that there is a difference between artists who are career-driven and artists who have a calling and are just compelled to make music, compelled to perform live, and the business isn’t the reason they’re doing it. In fact, there isn’t really a reason. You just do it.”

Meanwhile, the Cult have confirmed they’ll play an exclusive UK festival set at the inaugural Alt-Fest at Boughton Estate, Kettering, during August 15-17. The crowdfunded event will also be headlined by Marilyn Manson and Gary Numan, with tickets on sale now at an earlybird price of £85.

Kiss have won the public poll for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame next year.

Over 1,390,000 people voted over 16 nominees and Kiss drew 17.22% of those, a total of 239,417 people. Nirvana came second with 15.69% followed by Deep Purple (11.93%), Yes (10.88%), Hall And Oates (8.1%) and Peter Gabriel (7.97%).

But it doesn’t mean Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons will be inducted – the fan choice only counts as one vote, with around 600 others to be placed by musicians, businessmen and commentators.

If they do make the grade, Simmons recently insisted founding members Ace Frehley and Pete Criss wouldn’t be invited to the ceremony in New York in April. He compared them to “cancer” and added: “How many chances in life to do you get? Those guys had three chances to be in the band. Three times they fucked it up.”

But Frehley later said: “There’s no way Gene can put a lid on it. I mean, what’s he gonna do?”

Meanwhile, guitarist Frehley’s New York home was seriously damaged in a fire over the weekend. No one was injured in the accident. Frehley is thought not to live in the building, which is instead inhabited by a caretaker, and was recently the subject of foreclosure action as a result of unpaid mortgage arrears.

Santa Claus, the Three Wise men and other guardians of Christmas traditions receive 8 million letters per year, even as the internet era has made traditional mail less popular, the UN post agency says.

The number of children's letters to these Christmas figures has risen by a third over the past five years, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) said.

Although the letters are often simply addressed to 'Santa, North Pole' or to 'Father Christmas', postal workers in countries ranging from Brazil to Finland to Lebanon make sure that they are not returned as undeliverable.

In several countries, services have been set up so that children receive actual replies to their letters.

Undaunted hobbits trumped princess power at the multiplex.

According to studio estimates on Sunday, Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was No. 1 at the US box office with $US73.7 million ($A82.62 million), beating last weekend's No.1 film, Disney's animated fable Frozen.

Melting down to the No. 2 position, Frozen earned $US22.2 million in its third weekend, bringing its impressive overall domestic ticket total to nearly $US164.4 million.

Despite its first place position, Hobbit fell short of topping its prequel's debut. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which opened this same weekend last year, gained $US84.6 million.

'Hobbit rules this date and Warner Bros has linked this brand to this time of year very effectively,' said box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak.

The holiday-themed Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas came in third place with $US16.2 million.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, earned $US13.2 million for the fourth place slot. To date Catching Fire has grossed $US739.9 million, surpassing the worldwide box office total for The Hunger Games, which brought in $US691 million.

Disney's super hero sequel, Thor: The Dark World, continues to thrive as it remained in the top five with $US2.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $US198.1 million.

In its second weekend, drama Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck, dropped to the sixth place position with $US2.3 million after opening in the third place slot.

Comedy Delivery Man, with Vince Vaughn as the lead, dropped in at No.7 in its fourth weekend at the box office with $US1.9 million, bringing its domestic total to $US28 million.

Philomena, starring Judi Dench, who received a best actress Golden Globe Awards nomination for her performance as a nun in search of her son, landed in the No.8 spot with $US1.8 million.

In its sixth weekend at the box office, Fox's Nazi Germany-set The Book Thief, starring Emily Watson, Geoffrey Rush and Sophie Nelisse, held ninth position with $US1.7 million.

Coming in at No.10 was the Jason Statham and James Franco-starring Open Road crime thriller Homefront, which gained $US1.6 million in its third weekend. Its total domestic gross is now $US18.4 million.

Opening in limited release in just six locations, David Russell's con artist tale, American Hustle, scored $US690,000 over the weekend. This aces the success of his Oscar-winning film Silver Linings Playbook, which saw $US27,687 during its opening weekend in December last year.

American Hustle, featuring stellar performances by Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, has been nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards and two Screen Actors Guild nominations.

Bob Dylan is being probed in relation to alleged racist comments after a community organisation raised a lawsuit against him.

The CRICCF, which looks after the interests of Croatians living in France, have named Dylan in their legal action alongside the French edition of Rolling Stone.

They say quotes attributed to him, which were published in September 2012, amount to incitement of racial hatred and break national laws – and as a result he’s been placed under judicial investigation.

In the interview Dylan is quoted as making a reference to the war of independence fought between Croatian and Serb forces in the 1990s: “If you got a slave master of [Ku Klux] Klan in your blood, blacks can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian blood.”

The CRICCF raised the complaint last November, objecting to the comparison between the KKK, Nazis and Croatians. A spokesman said: “We have nothing against Rolling Stone or Bob Dylan – but you cannot equate Croatian [war] criminals with all Croats.”

French authorities have now placed the singer-songwriter under judicial investigation. But the CRICCF say all they want is an apology.

Dylan was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in Paris last month.

The neighbourhood where 'Fast Furious' star Paul Walker died in a fiery crash is known to attract street racers, but law enforcement officials do not believe the Porsche in which Paul Walker and a friend were riding had been racing another car.

Accident investigators 'have received eyewitness statements that the car involved was travelling alone at a high rate of speed,' the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement on Monday.

'No eyewitness has contacted the (department) to say there was a second vehicle.'

Walker and his friend and fellow fast-car enthusiast Roger Rodas died on Saturday when Rodas' 2005 Porsche Carrera GT smashed into a light pole and tree, then exploded in flames. The posted limit was 45mph (72km/h).

The two had taken what was expected to be a brief drive away from a charity fundraiser and toy drive at Rodas' custom car shop in Valencia, northwest of Los Angeles. Walker's publicist said the action star was the passenger.

The crash happened on a street that forms a near two-kilometre loop amid industrial office parks. It is rimmed by hills and relatively isolated from traffic, especially on weekends when the businesses are closed.

'It's well-known out here that that's a hot spot for street racers,' California Highway Patrol Sgt Rick Miler said.

Skid marks are a testament to past antics on the loop. The sheriff's department, which polices the neighbourhood, said Saturday's wreck was not the first speed-related crash there, but would not reveal specifics.

Meanwhile, investigators are consulting video from security cameras, talking to witnesses and analysing physical evidence such as on-board computer data from the Porsche.

A steady stream of fans has flocked to the crash site to leave flowers, candles and memorabilia from the action films.

Seeking to regroup from his health care law's disastrous rollout, US President Barack Obama has insisted that the sweeping overhaul is working and warned Republican critics that he would fight any efforts to strip away its protections.

'We're not repealing it as long as I'm president,' Obama said during a health care event on Tuesday at the White House.

'If I have to fight another three years to make sure this law works, then that's what I'll do.'

Earlier on Tuesday, the administration released a 50-state report saying that nearly 1.5 million people were found eligible for Medicaid during October.

As website problems depressed sign-ups for subsidised private coverage, that safety-net program for low-income people saw a nearly 16 per cent increase in states that have agreed to expand it, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The White House is trying to cast the health care law in a positive light after the first two months of enrolment for the centrepiece insurance exchanges were marred with technical problems.

With the majority of problems with the sign-up website resolved, by the accounting of administration officials, Obama and his team plan to spend much of December trying to remind Americans why the administration fought for the law in the first place.

'We believe that in America, nobody should have to worry about going broke because somebody in their family or they got sick,' Obama said, flanked by people the White House says have benefited from the law.

Despite Obama's sunny presentation, officials are furiously working behind the scenes to rectify an unresolved issue with enrolment data that could become a significant headache after the first of the year.

Insurers say much of the enrolment data they're receiving is practically useless, meaning some consumers might not be able to get access to benefits on January 1, the date their coverage is scheduled to take effect.

Spotify, the world's most popular music streaming website, has revealed how much an artist makes from each song listened to in an effort to fight criticism it shortchanges musicians.

On a new site aimed at artists, spotifyartist.com, the company defends its business model against a raft of recent accusations, including from Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, that streaming sites of its ilk leave singers high and dry.

In its first attempt to fight the criticism, Spotify said on Tuesday it paid an average 'per-stream' payout of between $A0.007 and $A0.0092, though it cautioned that royalties depended greatly on where the music was produced or listened to.

Spotify said holders of rights included the artist, but could also bring in producers, managers and a record label.

'The precise division between these types of rights holders varies by territory in accordance with local laws and negotiated agreements,' it said.

In the United States, for example, the artist receives about 21 per cent of the payout.

In other words, if a hit by a US singer is listened to one million times, the artists will receive about $US1500, Spotify said.

But the company insisted the numbers told only part of the story.

'Although much public discussion of Spotify has speculated about such a rate, our payouts for individual artists have grown tremendously over time as a result of our user growth, and they will continue to do so,' the company said.

Created in 2006 by two Swedes, Spotify has yet to make a profit, unlike its US rival Pandora.

In 2012, the company said it lost 58.7 million euros ($A87.95 million), on sales of 434.7 million euros.

In July, Thom Yorke pulled his solo work from Spotify. Radiohead producer and Yorke collaborator Nigel Godrich tweeted at the time that web-streaming was 'an equation that just doesn't work.'

Iron Maiden have been cited by financial experts as among of the best UK success stories of recent years.

They’ve been named one of six organisations spearheading the music industry in the 21st century, and listed as one of the 1000 most inspiring companies in Britain.

And the London Stock Exchange has hailed the NWOBHM giants’ business model of working hard and touring regularly, noting that it’s turned the potential losses caused by illegal filesharing into big profits.

Iron Maiden LLP, the band’s holding firm, oversaw an online fanbase increase of five million during their Somewhere Back In Time world tour. Over the same period they scored well in terms of steady profit, strong online communication, creating jobs and securing contracts.

Greg Mead of analysts Musicmetric tells the Guardian: “The report suggests Maiden have been rather successful in turning free filesharing into fee-paying fans. This is clear proof that taking a global approach to live touring can pay off.”

And Tom Gilbert of the London Stock Exchange says relatively small firms like Maiden hold the key to future economic achievement. “Over the last few years the biggest companies have produced very few jobs,” he explains. “Jobs recovery has come from small and medium sizes companies.

“The vast majority of companies in the UK are small or medium and their success is something of an unreported story.”

Black Sabbath won three awards at last night’s Classic Rock Roll Of Honour, sponsored by Orange Amplification in association with Currencies.co.uk.

They took home Album Of The Year for comeback title 13, Event Of The Year for reaching number one after 43 years, and the previously announced Living Legends award. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler were present at London’s Roundhouse venue to celebrate what the frontman called a “shock year.”

The gala event, presented to an invited audience by prog musician Fish, also celebrated the work of Led Zeppelin, John Mayall, Wilko Johnson, Zakk Wylde and others.

Osbourne said: “I never thought I’d be standing here, what, 45 years later? It’s an incredible event for us all. We’re still in shock. It’s been an incredible year, after I spent all those earlier ones trying to kill myself.”

Bandmate Iommi, who’s continued to tour with the band despite receiving cancer treatment, said: “Thanks for everything – it’s great to see all these old and new faces.”

Classic Rock Awards as it happened

Jimmy Page accepted the FIlm Of The Year award for Led Zeppelin concert movie Celebration Day, saying: “It was a great concert and we got the energy into the video – well, the DVD… and the Blu-ray. I’m here on behalf of the band and I thank you on their behalf.”

Page returned to the stage to present Wilko Johnson with the Inspiration award. The former Dr Feelgood guitarist, who’s suffering from terminal cancer, laughed: “They told me I had ten months to live and ten months have gone by. How long can this go on? We don’t know. But it’s particularly gratifying to receive this recognition of my efforts.”

John Mayall was given the Classic Album gong for 1966 release Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton, recalling: “We had a lot of fun with it – we just did what we did on stage and had no designs other than making an honest album. The label never did understand how it sold so well.”

Other awards went to Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher, Mott The Hoople, and rising stars The Temperance Movement and The Virginmarys.

A US aircraft carrier has sent mercy flights into the typhoon-smashed Philippines, transporting urgently needed aid for survivors still begging for help in wreckage strewn with bodies a week after the disaster.

The USS George Washington is flying missions to towns worst-hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan as well as 'remote areas that we could not access earlier', Philippine Air Force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Okol said on Friday.

Thousands are feared to have died in the storm, and the lives of many others were hanging by the thinnest of threads, even as the relief operations moved up a gear.

In Tacloban city's only functioning hospital - without a roof, power or water - a woman frantically pumped air into the lungs of her husband, lying critically ill a day after his leg was amputated.

Valentina Gamba, the head of nursing at the hospital, said they had tried to discharge patients they could not feed.

'But they still stayed for shelter ... because they cannot go home,' Gamba said.

Several kilometres away at the city's airport, hundreds of famished and homeless survivors hoping to escape devastated Leyte island looked on as American soldiers unloaded aid from aircraft on to trucks.

Emergency supplies have been excruciatingly slow to get through to increasingly desperate survivors, with United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos admitting that the delivery of relief goods had not been quick enough.

On Friday, the Philippines government disputed the UN's take on the extent of the death toll. The world body says 4460 have been confirmed dead, but the Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council insisted the number remained at 2360.

The USS George Washington Strike Group - with 5000 sailors on the huge carrier alone, and seven other ships - arrived on Thursday with badly needed equipment, manpower and expertise, giving some hope that the delivery of aid would speed up.

'I heard there are now American planes,' 28-year-old Merly Araneta said.

'I will try to make it to the airport. But I have only eaten twice in five days and drank rainwater collected in a plastic cup. I am so tired.'

Tacloban mayor Alfred Romualdez said helicopters were 'delivering support and relief goods to different communities'.

Ships and planes from Asia-Pacific nations and Europe are converging on the Philippines, bearing food, water, medical supplies, tents and other essentials.

British Prime Minister David Cameron dispatched the biggest vessel in Britain's fleet, a helicopter carrier, while heavy transport planes carrying equipment such as forklift trucks have already arrived.

China has upped its aid contribution after its initial offer $US100,000 ($A107,532) was widely criticised, and its state media increased the pressure on Beijing on Friday, urging it to join other countries in deploying warships.

At Tacloban airport, US aircraft were coming in two at a time. American servicemen were driving trucks loaded with aid and appeared to be acting quasi-independently, with a large part of the airfield to themselves.

Romualdez said he was 'very grateful' for all the help. But on the city's streets, the sense of want is gnawing for a population in dire need of the basics of life.

In a heavily damaged school that had been turned into a makeshift shelter for around 1000 people, Alita Nabelga, 81, said water was starting to get through, but that there was no food or medicine.

'It is so hard for us here. There is nothing to eat. There is water that is rationed. But it would be better if there was food,' she said.

'Where are the Americans? Are they bringing us rice?' she added.

A US embassy official told AFP the carrier's strike group was getting supplies on to the ground.

'We're setting up a significant presence, but it is still under the direction of the Philippines,' he said.

Aid agencies welcomed the USS George Washington's arrival.

'It will probably stabilise the situation for people in remote communities who remain isolated,' Red Cross spokesman Patrick Fuller said.

'What is critical is that we humanitarian organisations have good co-operation with the military. It's crucial that good civil-military operations work effectively. We have experience in places like Haiti where there was some communication gap.'

AFP journalists saw dead bodies still lying by the side of the road on Friday, and the smell of rotten flesh still hung in the air, despite many corpses being put in bags ready for mass burial.

While the retrieval of the dead continues, there are growing fears for the health of those who survived.

The World Health Organisation says there are significant injuries that need to be dealt with - open wounds that can easily become infected in the sweltering tropical heat.

Experts warn that a reliable supply of clean drinking water is vital if survivors are to avoid diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration and death, especially in small children.
