Class of 2014 Hall Of Fame nominations for Nirvana and Deep Purple

Nirvana, Kiss, The Replacements, Yes and Deep Purple have each been nominated for next year’s Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

The other nominations for the class of 2014 include Hall & Oates, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Peter Gabriel, LL Cool J, N.W.A., Link Wray, the Meters, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens and The Zombies. The top voted acts will be inducted in April at a ceremony in New York City.

2014 is the first year in which Nirvana have been eligible for entry with their debut single Love Buzz being released in 1988.

Once again the public will play a key role in deciding who will inducted into the Hall Of Fame as they vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 10, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they’d like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a “fan’s ballot” that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the class of 2014.

Jon Lord experimental concert launched online

The family and friends of the late Jon Lord have launched a website offering 11 videos shot during a previously-unreleased chamber orchestra concert in 2010.

The Trondheim Experiment includes a performance of Deep Purple classic Child In Time, complete with children’s choir, and the evening’s finale dedicated to Ronnie James Dio, who’d died the previous week.

The clips were shot at Nidaros Cathedral in Norway on May 24 that year and have been pieced together using audience recordings. The website include behind-the-scenes sections and an interview with the keyboard icon, who passed away last year.

Billed as “a celebration of good friends and music,” the concert took place in a location that Lord admired highly and referred to as “the venue of the gig that changed his life in 2003.”

Introducing Child In Time Lord says: “This is a big number in my life, this one. I love doing it in a slightly more Lordy way than the Purple way – but it’s pretty much the same.

“It became a very powerful song – it seemed to say a lot for a generation and somehow it stills says the same thing. The same stupid things keep happening all over the place. Still, we keep trying, don’t we? Onwards and upwards, my mother always said.”

Lord dedicates The Sun Will Shine Again to Dio, commenting: “Rest in peace, Ronnie. A fantastic guy with a heart as big as himself. We shall always remember him – but this is also for everybody who ever felt right down in the ground and thought it’s never going to get any better. The sun will shine again, as the song says.”

The website explains: “This is a tribute to Jon Lord, a hero and friend. This is also a celebration of a very special concert. In many ways it was an experiment – new arrangements, new musicians, songs rarely played.”

Maiden, Queen, Led Zep men guest on Sunflower Superjam DVD

Two years of Sunflower Jam shows will be released on DVD next month, featuring members of Iron Maiden, Queen and Led Zeppelin – plus late Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord’s final live performance.

Main feature is the 2012 Sunflower Jam, held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, which saw the the stage shared by Bruce Dickinson, Brian May, John Paul Jones, Alice Cooper, Ian Paice, Mark King, Alfie Boe and others.

A bonus disc carries the previous year’s show in the same location, at which Lord made his last public musical appearance ahead of his passing from cancer. Performances also came from Deep Purple, Rick Wakeman, Joe Bonamassa and others.

Both events raised funds for the Sunflower Jam charity, which provides complementary treatment to young victims of cancer. The Sunflower Superjam DVD goes on sale on September 16. Find out more.

Next year’s event will be a tribute to Lord, who co-founded the charity in 2005. Dickinson, Wakeman and members of Purple are set to perform on April 4, with full details to be announced in due course.

Deep Purple Reveal New Album Title, Single Release Date

They might not be making it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just yet, but that’s not stopping Deep Purple from moving forward with new music. The legendary British rockers will release a new album titled ‘NOW What?!’ on April 30 in North America via earMUSIC. Fans will get their first taste of the new music from a double A-side single released on March 29.


Deep Purple recorded the album in Nashville with famed rock producer Bob Ezrin, whose long list of credits includes Kiss (‘Destroyer’), Pink Floyd (‘The Wall’), and a slew of early Alice Cooper albums, among many others. ‘NOW What?!’ features 11 new tracks, and according to a press release, the album “was recorded with no musical rules, and it shows a modern and fresh production…to the point that Deep Purple have never sounded so close to the spirit of the ’70s in the last 20 years as they do now.”

In addition to the usual formats, ‘NOW What?!’ will be released as a limited edition with a bonus DVD featuring the band discussing the new album, and including a bonus studio cover version. It will also be released as a double vinyl LP. The double A-side single ‘Hell to Pay’ and ‘All the Time in the World’ will be released on March 29 on 7″ vinyl (limited to 1,000 numbered copies), as well as digital download and a CD single that will also features bonus live versions of ‘Perfect Strangers’ and ‘Rapture of the Deep.’

Deep Purple will also announce a world tour in support of the album soon.

Fender creates guitar in honour of former Deep Purple member.

Deep Purple to Reissue ‘Slaves and Masters’

Last month, we told you that Deep Purple will be reissuing 10 albums from their catalog throughout 2013. The first of which, ‘Live in Paris 1975,’ is due to hit stores on Jan. 29. The second, ‘Slaves and Masters,’ will be released a week later, on Feb. 5.

Released in 1990, ‘Slaves and Masters’ features the Mark V lineup, where guitarist Ritchie Blackmore rejoined the band and brought in Joe Lynn Turner, who had sang with Blackmore in Rainbow from 1980-84, to replace Ian Gillan. ‘Slaves and Masters’ was Turner’s only album with Deep Purple. Gillan would return in late-1992, making it the second reunion of their most famous lineup, the Mark II.

The reissue of ‘Slaves and Masters’ includes two bonus tracks, the radio edit of the single, ‘Love Conquers All’ and its B-side, ‘Slow Down Sister.’ The album only reached No. 87, the lowest chart position in the U.S. for a Deep Purple album since 1970, but hit No. 5 in Switzerland, where it went gold.

Meanwhile, you can now hear samples of ‘Live in Paris 1975′ over at Amazon U.K. The concert was the final show of the Mark III lineup. Blackmore had already formed Rainbow and would be replaced by Tommy Bolin.

Deep Purple will release a new album on April 30, 2013.

Fans to vote for 2013 Rock Hall of Famers

NEW YORK – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced this year’s nominees on Thursday, including hip-hop pioneers Public Enemy, the late Donna Summer and rock bands Deep Purple and Rush, and it said the public for the first time would be able to vote on who should be inducted.

Music fans will have until Dec. 5 to vote and their ballots for the top five artists will be combined with those from a committee of music experts to decide which artists will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at an April 18 ceremony in Los Angeles.

In the past, that decision has been taken solely by a Hall of Fame committee of some 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry.

Hopefuls on this year’s list include Heart, N.W.A, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Randy Newman, Albert King, The Marvelettes, The Meters, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Procol Harum, Chic and influential German electronic music group Kraftwerk.

Others got their nods after death, including Deep Purple co-founder and keyboardist Jon Lord, who died in July aged 71. British heavy metal rockers Deep Purple released 18 studio albums over their career spanning six decades.

Disco queen Summer also died earlier this year from cancer at age 63. The sultry-voiced singer won five Grammy awards and sold more than 130 million records worldwide.

While some of nominees, such as Jett and California hip hop group N.W.A., have stayed under the radar in recent years, others such as rockers Rush and Public Enemy, are still going strong, releasing albums this year and performing live.

American hard rock band Heart’s new album “Fanatic” was released this week. Singer Randy Newman, 68, has forged a successful career writing film scores, most recently for 2010′s “Toy Story 3″ and for the upcoming 2013 Disney Pixar animation “Monsters University.”

To be eligible for nomination, a band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years before the year of nomination. This year, that meant the band’s first recording was no later than 1987.

Music fans can cast their vote starting on Thursday at websites rockhall.com, hbo.com, CNN.com and rollingstone.com.

The April induction ceremony will be broadcast on cable TV channel HBO later in 2013.

Hughes’ second thoughts over Purple tribute

Glenn Hughes had second thoughts about whether to contribute to Deep Purple tribute album Re-Machined.

But in the end he appears on two tracks of the disc dedicated to celebrating the 40th anniversary of the band’s groundbreaking Machine Head album.

Re-Machined is released later this month but is available now as part of a Classic Rock Fan Pack.

The former member, who’s currently fronting Black Country Communion – although possibly not for much longer – recorded a version of Maybe I’m A Leo with Chad Smith and Luis Maldonado.

Then when keyboardist Jon Lord died suddenly, he went back into the studio to lay down a cover of Highway Star, even though Smith’s band Chickenfoot had already delivered their own version. His take on the track is included as an exclusive bonus in the Fan Pack edition.

Hughes tells Noisecreep of his involvement: “At first I wasn’t sure I wanted to be. There are certain songs I wouldn’t want to try and re-do.

“Originally Black Country Communion was going to do Highway Star, but Joe Bonamassa was just too busy. So I did Maybe I’m A Leo and I love how it turned out.

“The reason we did Highway Star was, I’d just gotten off a plane and heard the news about Jon. I was just crushed.

“I knew Chickenfoot had already done it, but I wanted to do something for Jon. So we got Steve Vai for a very quick, live and wonderful recording session.”

Hughes, a member of Purple between 1973 and 1976, says Vai is “king of that genre” and adds: “He inspired me to really open up my pipes and go for it, which I did, for Jon.”

He believes Machine Head stands out because “it blended so many interesting types of metal songs.

“When I think about the prototype of what heavy metal was back then, there were two huge bands that mattered. We can include Zeppelin but I know Jimmy and Robert don’t consider them part of that. So the two primary bands were Sabbath and Purple.

“But whereas Sabbath was heavy, Purple was more refined and melodic metal. It was different.”

Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Label Society and More to Appear on Deep Purple Tribute Album, ‘Re-Machined’

Metallica, Iron Maiden, Chickenfoot, Steve Vai and other artists will appear on Re-Machined: A Tribute to Machine Head a Deep Purple tribute album scheduled to be released September 4.

The album, which features cover versions of every track on Deep Purple’s classic 1972 album, also will feature appearances by Carlos Santana, Joe Bonamassa, Black Label Society, The Flaming Lips and supergroups featuring Steve Vai, Chad Smith, Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan and former Deep Purple member Glenn Hughes.

Machine Head, one of hard rock’s most celebrated albums, features several classic tracks, including such as “Smoke on the Water,” “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin’.”

“We were asked if we’d contribute to the anniversary of [classic Deep Purple album] Machine Head — we can’t turn that down,” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told Loudwire.com. “We’re circling the Dio and Purple catalogs and hopefully we’ll come up with something that is worthy of these wonderful men.” Metallica have covered “When a Blind Man Cries” on the Deep Purple tribute.

News of the album’s falls closely after the death of former Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord, who died July 16.
