Steven Tyler, Aerosmith leave Manila after sellout show

American rock band Aerosmith led by singer Steven Tyler left Manila on Thursday afternoon, flying to the US via Bangkok on board Thai Airways flight TG 621 at 1:05PM at the NAIA terminal 1.

Accompanied by their retinue of security personnel, Tyler and his bandmates checked in at the Customs and Immigration lane in less than 10 minutes, surprising passengers and airport employees.

No one was able to ask for a photo ops with the former “American Idol” judge as he was whisked away to the airport’s VIP room, where he waited before boarding his flight.

Aerosmith arrived in Manila on Sunday and performed in a sellout concert at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday night. Tickets to the show — the only Asian stop so far in their ongoing world tour — cost as high P20,000 ($480).

The band behind such rock anthems as “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” and “Walk This Way” will return to Asia in August to do several shows in Japan.

Marlon Stockinger Unlikely To Enter Showbiz Soon

It looks like TV, movies and modeling contracts for Filipino-Swiss racing sensation Marlon Stockinger will have to wait.

The handsome young man is bent on accomplishing a lifelong dream – to become the first ever Filipino to be a full-fledged Formula 1 (F1) driver.

Asked about plans of entering showbiz, Stockinger said, “Right now I’m devoting all my time and energy to racing. I know that I’ve been given one-of-a-kind opportunities to pursue my dream, and I’m dead-set on making the most of them.”

Stockinger was back in the country for 10 days recently and has created quite a clamor for his presence after being named a Junior Driver for the Lotus F1 team of Eric Boullier.

Already a sports hero in his own right, Stockinger is another excellent Filipino athlete shining through the international sports arena. “It’s a great honor to be part of the Lotus F1 Team, and an even greater honor to bear the Filipino flag as I train and compete,” said he.

The racing sensation is now in Europe to continue testing in France and Spain later this month.

By April onwards, he begins competing in a series of 18 races all over Europe. Two races will be held in a different country each weekend starting in Italy on April 6 and 7, followed by Spain on April 27 and 28, Monaco in time for the F1 Grand Prix on May 25 and 26, in Belgium on June 1 and 2, Russia on June 22 and 23, Austria on July 20 and 21, Hungary on September 14 and 15, France on September 28 and 29, and finally capping off with Races 17 and 18 in Spain on October 19 and 20.

In between, Stockinger will return to Manila for the big Lotus F1 roadshow from May 4-5.

California Pizza Kitchen opens in Binondo

MANILA, Philippines - For California Pizza Kitchen, nothing is off limits. This is precisely why California Pizza Kitchen (CPK), without fear, opened its eighth location where dimsums reign – Binondo.

During the launch of its newest branch at the third floor of the barely three months old Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo, CPK vice president of international franchise Gabriel Sinohuiz said Binondo, despite its old China atmosphere, is in tune with the east-meets-west concept of CPK.

He said the Beverly Hills-based pizza parlor is very much into experimentation, resulting in “unexpected” flavors rolled into one pizza.

“When we first rolled out, we were the pizza authority…in innovative gourmet. It’s our niche,” he said.

Binondo, which is a melting pot of cultures, is likewise prepared for gourmet pizza, he said.

“We’re providing Chinatown residents and visitors something that is expected of such a historic location: the best-choices in California-inspired cuisine, exciting and flavorful pizzas and American quality service,” added Archie Rodriguez, chief executive of Global Restaurant Concepts, Inc., the franchisee of CPK in the Philippines.

And in a few months’ time, the unique palate of Binondo residents and hobnobbing clients from faraway north will get to add to the increasing list of inspired pizzas in CPK’s menu. Just a few years back, CPK rolled out its adobo pizza, which even surpassed the classic barbecue chicken pizza in terms of popularity, Sinohuiz added.

“Being Californian is just a mindset,” he said. In fact, even Asian-inspired CPK menus even make its way to other branches across the world.

One of the interesting options offered to guests last Wednesday was the Asian Specialty Wrap: prime steak ribs sautéed with yellow onions, red and green bell peppers, bean sprouts, quesadilla cheese wrapped in oven-hot tortilla and nori.

An ordinary pizza parlor would go the route of calzone in view of the Italian craze, but CPK is doing the wraps this time. It’s not just the steak that makes this wrap the star of the launch, but the delicate and slightly fruity taste of the enoki mushroom and then dunked in wasabi sauce or teriyaki glaze.

Sinohuiz expects that the Asian wraps (another option is chicken strips) will find its way into the international market.

He said he will not be surprised if wanton wraps or squid-ink pizzas will each get a spot soon on the menu list.

Cuisine comes to Chinatown

Besides the heavily favored Asian Steak Wrap, guests were also treated to the innovative use of different herbs from the soup to the pasta.

Reading “mushroom cappuccino soup” in the menu already ups the ante, but having it served in shot glasses makes one think: “Am I cosmopolitan, or what?” More mushrooms here (fresh button mushrooms and abalone), but this time crushed and mixed in shiitake cream.

The cappuccino surprise is more of the milk froth and nutmeg topping the soup. Maybe the last two ingredients blended into oblivion into the richness of the mushrooms, but sweets should be served via dessert.

Of course, the shot glass was only for proportion purposes, in order that guests will still have room in their stomachs for the main menu.

The Chinese Chicken Salad, which has long been in the core menu of CPK, was as refreshing as usual.

A taste of the Chicken Piccata pasta would bring back memories of college days. Owners would probably cringe at this pasta being compared to a famous instant pancit canton noodles that benefited well the hungry college kid.

This should be taken as a compliment, however. Instead of the sometimes soggy two minutes-overcooked instant noodles, Chicken Piccata uses the firmer spaghettini with lots of lemon caper sauce and chicken strips.

What is CPK without the pizza? Guests were served with the Farmers Market pizza that should attract vegetarians and almost gorged patrons. It has grilled zucchini, tomatoes, goat cheese and other kinds of cheeses. Somewhere in between bites, an overbearing Pinoy will have to sink his teeth into the roasted squash and think of camote or sweet potato.

Sangria
CPK also serves a fruit sangria, which some guests adventurously chose to wash down their food. Instead of the Spanish red sangria, CPK uses the blush wine (from same red grapes but skins are removed after fermentation, thus the lighter color) with a dash of soda and apple chops.

The desserts were not Asian-ish, however, with the usual ref cakes and chocolate cakes.

Sinohuiz explained, however, that the desserts were “localized” for the Filipino palate. While Americans want their cakes sweeter, Filipinos will opt for the sugar level down a few notches.

CPK’s popular key lime pie in the US also evolved into the mango crunch pie to celebrate the Filipino fruit, he said.

The innovation will further continue and the CPK menu list will see a restructuring when Global Restaurant opens a few more branches in the next few months, including an expansion outside Manila.

CPK senior operations director Luisa del Rosario Lomotan said at least three more will open this year, including one at Harbor Point in Subic on November 6 and another at the Bonifacio Global City on November 15).

Sinohuiz said branches in Boracay, Cebu and Davao are also in the pipeline.

“CPK is a very flexible and adaptable brand,” he said, adding the Philippines is a very good opportunity while its market in the US is undergoing rebranding to make CPK a pizza authority once more.

Man beats up cashier in Manila, faces raps

MANILA, Philippines – The Manila Police District on Friday said it will file charges against a man who was seen attacking a restaurant cashier in Manila last Monday.

A closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, aired by GMA news program "24 Oras", showed suspect John Paul Encinas dousing cashier Marjorie Reynaldo with water, throwing a bottle at her, pulling her by the collar and shoving money in her face.

The altercation reportedly began when Encinas asked Reynaldo if he could go to his car first to get the money for his P85 bill.

However, Encinas claimed Reynaldo rudely responded to his request by saying: "Ay hindi, kailangan magbayad ka na. Kailan ka magbabayad, ngayon? Bukas? Sa isang taon?"

An infuriated Encinas left the restaurant but later came back and then attacked Reynaldo.

Encinas admitted his mistake and said sorry on national television. However, he said he hopes Reynaldo also learned her lesson.

"Siguro tao lang po kaya nagagawa po iyun… nagsisisi ako sa action pero sana nabigyan ko din siya ng konting lesson," Encinas told GMA News.

Police said Encinas is facing unjust vexation, physical injury, and threat and slander by deed. – with a report from Ricky Velasco, dzMM

Ovation Productions confirms Sting’s Manila concert

Tim Yap’s tweet was right, after all. In its latest post on its official website, Ovation Productions has announced that Sting will indeed perform in Manila on December 9 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The actual announcement reads: “Sting has just been confirmed to perform in Manila on December 9 at the MOA Arena. Tickets will be on sale starting September 21 at 12 noon at all SM Ticket outlets and online at www.smtickets.com.

InterAksyon earlier reported that on September 11 multimedia personality Tim Yap tweeted about the legendary singer-songwriter’s upcoming Manila gig, complete with details of the date and venue. It was a premature announcement that came with no confirmation from the organizers involved.

This was followed by a report that several promoters, including Ovation Productions, were still bidding for the event.

Sting’s 2011- 2012 “Back to Bass” world tour has garnered spectacular reviews throughout North America, Europe, the UK, and South Africa. The tour heads to Southeast Asia in December. Sting’s Manila concert is promoted by Ovation Productions, the same group that staged Sting’s memorable sold-out concert in Manila at the ULTRA outdoor stadium in 1994.

This will be the third Manila stop for the Grammy-winning artist who scored dozens of hits both as a solo act and as frontman of The Police, the band he co-founded with guitarist Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.

Sting’s two previous concerts in the country were in 1994 for his “Summoner’s Tales” tour – also promoted by Ovation as mentioned in their announcement – and in 1996, for his “Mercury Falling” tour that was presented by J & B and Gilbey’s Gin.

Sting’s Manila concert still under negotiations, promotion up for grabs

A source from the local concert circuit who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that bidding is still ongoing for the coming Manila concert of Sting that was earlier tweeted by multimedia personality Tim Yap.

After tweeting last September 11 that Sting will perform specifically at the Mall of Asia Arena on December 9 and asked everyone to “wait for the official announcement,” Yap has since not tweeted about the matter.

The source, however, told InterAksyon that the bidding process is still ongoing and added that Ovation Productions, Dayly Entertainment and other organizers are vying for the event.

Ovation Productions, one of the oldest concert promoters in the country, promoted the Manila stop of the legendary singer-songwriter’s “Summoner’s Tales” world tour in 1994. It staged the successful return engagement of Tears For Fears this year and will bring the “American Idol Live! Tour 2012” concert to Manila this September 21 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Dayly Entertainment is a fairly young events production company that brought Snow Patrol and David Cook earlier this year and will next stage Maroon 5’s September 18 gig at the Big Dome.

To date, Sting’s official website does not include Manila in his ongoing “Back To Bass” world tour.

But if negotiations push through, the Grammy-award winning artists will be performing in the country for the third time.

In 1996, J & B and Gilbey’s presented Sting’s “Mercury Falling” concert held at the PSC Football Stadium.

Smashing Pumpkins thank Manila fans via Twitter, vow to return soon

Band leader Billy Corgan’s tweet pretty much sums it up: “Manila fans, you’re the best. Thanks to everyone who made the show possible. Our prayers go out to everyone who has been affected.”

Even as they continued to show their concern for “the 800,000 left homeless by the recent Metro floods” as tweeted by Greenpeace, Corgan and the rest of the Smashing Pumpkins simply could not hide how overwhelmed they were with the reception to their rescheduled concert Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Manila! You guys killed, thanks for making this night so memorable. Rain can’t stop rock n’ roll!,” added drummer Mike Byrne in a separate tweet.

The postponement of the much-anticipated concert originally slated for last Tuesday turned out to be a blessing in disguise both for the band and for fans as it allowed both parties to constantly communicate with each other via Twitter, eventually affecting the conduct of the concert in a big way.

After announcing the one-day delay of their show with the tweet, “I’m happy to report thanks to our great crew and with the helpful assistance of Manila promoter we have rescheduled our show for tomorrow,” Corgan went on to spend much of the day at an almost deserted Shangri-La Plaza mall, a place he would describe as “zombie mall” in a subsequent tweet.

Lovely bass player Nicole Fiorentino sympathized with those affected by the incessant rains with her tweet, “my heart goes out to all of the families who are dealing with the floods in Manila right now.”

“Manila, I am thrilled that we get to play tomorrow night. My heart was breaking thinking we were leaving here without rocking out for you!,” she added.

As the weather gradually improved the following day, an elated Corgan tweeted Wednesday morning, “The show goes on! Skies clearing over Manila/our prayers go out to all the families affected by floods. God willing we’ll see u 2night!”

Still, the rains did not stop long enough for the floods to fully subside as the band continued to update fans with concert-related activities in their live tweets.

“Getting an education in The Grateful Dead backstage with the crew, cant wait to light it up for you Jerry style, Manila!,” Byrne posted before adding “Saw the “Thrilla in Manila” banner during soundcheck today, crazy!”

Fiorentino and Corgan went a step further by tweeting pictures of their soundcheck experience from their impressive equipment to their awestruck view of the Smart Araneta Coliseum’s interiors to backstage stuff.

In the case of Fiorentino, she even asked fans which of her two dresses they preferred her to wear, “Yellow or red tonight,” she tweeted around two hours before they took the stage.
“Manila! We are pushing back our start time a half hour to give people more time to get here. Start time 9:15,” she later tweeted in anticipation of the difficulty people will encounter (traffic, floods) in getting to the venue.

True enough, people were still arriving midway through the concert as the Pumpkins lived up to the “emotional and enthusiastic show” that Corgan promised during the press conference that took place Monday afternoon.

“#SPPH about to hit the stage. OCEANIA first, special surprises to follow…oh yeah Manila, special show bonus for you!,” the band’s charismatic leader tweeted before taking the stage.

And as announced, the band performed its latest album, “Oceania” in its entirety and further enhanced by a giant ball that projected the visual spectacle of Sean Evans, who helped in designing the newest staging of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.”

But it was the second and extended half of the show that lasted until midnight that really kept the fans cheering for more and more as the band revisited its rich back catalogue of greatest hits and obscure favorites as requested by fans on Twitter.

“I was in tears when they played Luna and XYU. So much memories,” tweeted fan John Galsim (@jobeck).

“What a way to experience the new album for the first time. Then I turned into a 13 year old again with when the bells rang for Disarm,” posted Carlo Casas (@carlocasas).

But as much as the Pumpkins were very pleased with the more than respectable turnout, they were also very much aware that a good number of fans, many of whom had bought tickets in advance, were still not able to make it.

To them, Corgan specifically addressed this tweet: “For all the fans who CANNOT come tonight due to the weather we will come back again soon. We have been treated so well, and we thank you.”

Smashing Pumpkins to perform latest album in full in Manila concert

If you still haven’t bought a copy of “Oceania,” the latest album by The Smashing Pumpkins distributed by PolyEast Records, then it’s still not too late to get one and brush up on its 13 tracks.

Because that’s exactly what you’ll hear when they take to the stage of the Smart Araneta Coliseum Tuesday night. Yes, the entire album described by British music magazine NME as the band’s best since 2000’s “Machina/The Machines of God” will be performed in its entirety and in the order of its track listing.

Known for their trippy and progressive brand of alternative rock, the Pumpkins’ new release is actually part of “Teargarden By Kaleidyscope,” the ambitious 44-song project that was intended to capture the band’s psychedelic roots and initially released as free mp3 downloads.

“Oceania” was created by the band as a true album experience for listeners to fully immerse themselves in the songs and musical performances. Which is why Corgan wants fans to enjoy it as a whole, not in parts.

“From a production standpoint I was dead set on making an album where every song was just as valuable as any other, ignoring the typical claptrap you hear about needing a single,” he pointed out.

“The only way to make the case that every song on ‘Oceania’ is worth hearing is to put your heart into the sequence as a cohesive whole. Once we felt we’d achieved that balance, only then did we let anyone outside our world hear the record we’d made.”

In addition to the music, the Pumpkins have always been hailed for what allmusic.com describes as “some of the ’90s’ most striking and memorable video clips.” The band’s unique audio-visual experience extends to its live performances as well.

So despite the lack of familiarity on the songs of “Oceania,” what should make its live interpretation unforgettable are the visuals prepared by Sean Evans, whose most recent work was assisting Roger Waters on the newest staging of “The Wall.”

For the “Oceania” tour, the band will be using new technology in video mapping to create something new and previously unseen.

But even with all that eye candy, fans who long for the band’s classic hits like “Today,” “Drown,” “1979,” “Tonight, Tonight,” “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” “Perfect” and more need not fret as the second half of their show will be devoted to performing these favorites.

And as the band is also known for their covers of classic rock hits that have been also compiled in several bootleg releases, expect the Pumpkins to close their show with one of these readings for their encore.

In the past, they’ve covered such classics as The Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker,” U2’s “Stay (Faraway So Close)” and The Cars’ “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight.” Corgan’s thoughtful interpretation of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” is already included in their greatest hits compilations.

And in a recent show in Melbourne, the band performed its own version of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” a tune that actually fits the atmospheric tone of “Oceania.”

But while the group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and influence a whole new generation as they continue to resonate on modern rock radio, Corgan insists that the band in its current incarnation — with guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bass player Nicole Fiorentino and drummer Mike Byrne — is more than just an “alluring, virtual jukebox.”

“If we’ve learned anything from playing as an intact unit now for over two years, it’s that unless we create our own sound and our own legacy, it’s a given that people will default to what they know; whether it’s my past or someone else’s,” Corgan stressed.

“The Smashing Pumpkins will always be defined by what we can create from our hands and hearts right now, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The Smashing Pumpkins will be “live tweeting” their August 7 Manila show at the Smart Araneta coliseum. For two hours before the show each band member will be tweeting with their photos and experiences from the local area and show and will be retweeted by @smashingpumpkin and supported by @twittermusic.

Fans are encouraged to tweet their photos of the show using the #SPPH hashtag.

Megadeth Family Values: Responsible headbangers rock Manila

There was a time when Dave Mustaine, founder and leader of the pioneering thrash metal band Megadeth, was notorious for his inflammatory views, particularly concerning politics, religion, and his relationship with his former band Metallica.

In one concert in Northern Ireland, he unwittingly incited a riot when he dedicated the band’s last song, a cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy In The U.K.”, to “the cause” which fans interpreted as meaning the IRA.

At one point, he also figured in a million-dollar lawsuit with Megadeth founding bassist David Ellefson over profits, merchandise, and publishing royalties.

Since becoming a born-again Christian in recent years, it seems like Mustaine has become a kinder, gentler though still outspoken rocker. He no longer disses his former bandmates at Metallica with whom he has since made his peace. He has reconciled with Ellefson who now plays bass for Megadeth again.

And the way he and his bandmates (Ellefson, drummer Shawn Drover and fellow guitarist Chris Broderick) politely and gamely answered questions from the media during the press conference that preceded Megadeth’s Manila concert Sunday night at the World Trade Center, you have to wonder why very few rock stars are like them.

But then again, not too many rock stars have sold over 30 million albums worldwide, 13 studio albums, nearly 30 hit singles, 32 music videos and 10 Grammy Award nominations under their belt. Any band that has lasted as long as Megadeth has and can still play at a high level is likely to also overcome some bad habits, bad decisions, and equally bad attitudes along the way.

Mustaine, now 50 and still an exceptional guitarist who has also learned to adjust his vocal pitch with age, particularly recalls the time when they had to give in to the whims of their former record label back in the 1990s.

“Everybody can say that they want to be with a major label. But let’s face it, the labels tell you what to do and the way they treat you if you don’t do what they say is, they just ignore you and then you go away,” he pointed out.

During that time, Dave said that their record company wanted them to be more alternative and asked them to wear flannel shirts and goaties (“which we hated”) and even went as far as trimming their famous logo “so it won’t look quite as metal.”

“After a while, we decided we weren’t gonna stand for that anymore. It took a lot of work to get us, our music, our fan base, back to where we wanted our relationship with them to be. Because we have families and because we have things we needed to do, we did whatever we could which resulted in more live play.”

Yes, family is very important to Megadeath as is the influence of their music to their younger fans. When asked about the band’s thoughts with being associated with sports and videogames, Mustaine stressed the importance of being a positive role model for their fans.

“Any band who would like to be successful would like their music to be associated with anything they can. We don’t really mind a lot of the things we’ve done sports-wise,” he replied matter-of-factly.

“Videogames, however, is a kind of a touchy area to get into, especially with the tragedy that just happened in Colorado. We have to think of the influence our music has on our fans. It’s important to be associated not just with the game itself but what the game actually stands for.”

Dave added that if the game is about “just racing a car around or collecting points and stuff like that, then that’s cool.” Having been involved with “shooter games” in the past, Mustaine said Megadeth is now more sensitive when it comes to accepting videogame tie-ins.

“Some games have approached us to do some things, but we said no to them mainly because of the language and nudity and content. We want our fans to learn about the opposite sex on their own, not from us or our music.”

Which also explains why he and the rest of the band write songs about more relevant subjects, such as well, today’s headlines.

“Just watching the news, watching the great country I come from being torn apart by our leader gives me enough stuff to write and sing about,” he admitted. “We’ve always been kind of an outspoken protest band although we never really said we’re a protest band. ‘Peace Sells’ was written 26 years ago and remains relevant to this day.”

As for any animosity that still exists not only between Megadeth and Metallica but also two other bands that comprise the so-called Big Four of thrash metal, namely Slayer and Anthrax, Mustaine said his band has no problem with any of their rivals.

“The history between me and Metallica is very tired. We’re closer to Slayer and Anthrax since we often tour with them,” he revealed.

Demeanor and outlook-wise, Mustaine and the rest of Megadeth have become responsible headbangers, but fans better not misconstrue that with mellowing down on their performances as well.

Last Sunday, they almost blew the roof off the World Trade Center in their “Megadeth: Live In Manila” concert organized by PULP Live World and co-presented by Colt45.

Even on that particularly dark stormy night, Megadeth still ruled with a killer set list that included popular metal anthems such as “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due,” “Hangar 18,” “Symphony of Destruction,” “Trust” and of course, “Peace Sells.”

“We don’t have any rituals. We just warm up a little bit, make sure all four of us are there,” Ellefson said, smiling. “Our game plan doesn’t change. We just try to give a great show and have a good time,” Mustaine added.

Marian Rivera Meets Grandparents For The First Time

MANILA, Philippines - Marian Rivera visited her birthplace Spain recently, which allowed for a happy reunion with his father who then facilitated a first time meeting between her daughter and her grandparents.

“Na-meet ko ang lola’t lolo ko na ‘di ko na-meet before. So, nagkaroon kami ng maliit na reunion sa Spain; kasama sila papa tapos lolo’t lola ko, yung mga uncle ko. Nagkaroon ng bonding at pag-uusap na ang saya-saya. Parang feeling ko sobrang kumpleto na lahat," said Rivera.

She excitedly related that her father is planning to visit the Philippines next year.

Rivera last saw her father, Spanish restaurateur Francisco Javier Alonzo Gracia in 2010. Prior, they were estranged for seven long years.

Rivera was born in Madrid, Spain. Javier Gracia separated with Rivera's mother, Amalia when the former model was just a child. Rivera grew up with relatives on her mother's side in Cavite, occasionally visiting her dad in Spain during school breaks. The number of visits waned when Rivera became too busy with her college studies as well as having to juggle time as ramp and commercial model.

Rivera was in tears when her father greeted her during a birthday concert in 2008, admitting that it was an unexpected surprise. It eventually allowed for the two to renew their bond culminating with Rivera visiting his father in 2010.

In a separate interview, Marian's boyfriend, Dingdong Dantes, denied that he had asked Gracia's blessing to marry his daughter during the visit. Rivera likewise denied the matter, insisting that she wouldn't try to hide it if it were the case.

According to Rivera, the visit was part of a long-planned vacation that she and Dantes thought necessary after having spent a great deal of time working together in the recently concluded GMA-7 series, "My Beloved."
