Spotify reveals royalty payments

Spotify, the world's most popular music streaming website, has revealed how much an artist makes from each song listened to in an effort to fight criticism it shortchanges musicians.

On a new site aimed at artists, spotifyartist.com, the company defends its business model against a raft of recent accusations, including from Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, that streaming sites of its ilk leave singers high and dry.

In its first attempt to fight the criticism, Spotify said on Tuesday it paid an average 'per-stream' payout of between $A0.007 and $A0.0092, though it cautioned that royalties depended greatly on where the music was produced or listened to.

Spotify said holders of rights included the artist, but could also bring in producers, managers and a record label.

'The precise division between these types of rights holders varies by territory in accordance with local laws and negotiated agreements,' it said.

In the United States, for example, the artist receives about 21 per cent of the payout.

In other words, if a hit by a US singer is listened to one million times, the artists will receive about $US1500, Spotify said.

But the company insisted the numbers told only part of the story.

'Although much public discussion of Spotify has speculated about such a rate, our payouts for individual artists have grown tremendously over time as a result of our user growth, and they will continue to do so,' the company said.

Created in 2006 by two Swedes, Spotify has yet to make a profit, unlike its US rival Pandora.

In 2012, the company said it lost 58.7 million euros ($A87.95 million), on sales of 434.7 million euros.

In July, Thom Yorke pulled his solo work from Spotify. Radiohead producer and Yorke collaborator Nigel Godrich tweeted at the time that web-streaming was 'an equation that just doesn't work.'

Excitement ahead of GTA V game launch

It cost more to make then many Hollywood blockbusters and, in certain circles, it has generated a similar hype.

Now the gaming world is preparing for what it has dubbed the 'most exciting' event in the entertainment calendar - Grand Theft Auto V will finally go on sale.

The video game reportedly cost around STG170 million ($A292.15 million) to make and market - more than films such as Avatar - and has sparked so much interest that stores will open their doors at midnight on Monday for special launch events.

Experts are tipping the game to smash sales records and estimates suggest it could generate one billion during its first year on sale when gamers are predicted to snap up some 25 million copies.

Tom Butler, social media editor of gaming site IGN.com, said thousands of workers have taken the day off for the launch or plan on calling in sick.

'Grand Theft Auto V will be the biggest entertainment launch of the year and possibly all-time with levels of consumer anticipation outstripping Harry Potter and Twilight,' he said.

'With gamers queuing at midnight to be among the first to play and the developer boasting thousands of hours of game play, there's no surprise that we're likely to see an outbreak of GTA flu this September.'

The gaming site polled 10,995 readers to ask whether they would take time off work on Tuesday when the GTA V goes on sale.

According to its findings, 5,059 readers said they booked the day off as holiday.

Another 2012 (19 per cent) said they would phone in claiming to be unwell while 3,884 (35 per cent) said they would wait to get their hands on the game.

Fans are expected to start queuing outside stores stocking the game tomorrow when a handful of shops will open their doors for night-time launches.

The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series - which sees players buy virtual prostitutes - has accumulated sales of 135 million copies since its 1997 debut. GTA IV has reportedly sold more than 25 million copies since its 2008 release.

Apple ordered to modify e-book contracts

A US judge has ordered Apple to modify contracts with publishers to prevent electronic book price fixing and will appoint an external compliance monitor to review the company's antitrust policies.

The order was issued on Friday by federal Judge Denise Cote.

She is ordering Apple to make changes to its contracts to ensure it does not repeat the kind of price fixing that resulted when it colluded with publishers in 2010.

The judge ruled in July that the collusion occurred despite Apple's insistence that it acted fairly. The Justice Department said on Friday it was pleased with the order. It said consumers will benefit from lower e-book prices.

Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr says the company will appeal the July decision. He says Apple did not conspire to fix e-book pricing.

BPO sector identifies 40 more potential host-locations to sustain growth

MANILA - The Philippines has identified another 40 locations that can support the growth momentum of the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry.

This is on top of the 10 so-called "next-wave cities" (NWC) that the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) identified earlier.

Gillian Virata, BPAP senior executive director, said IT-BPO companies can also explore other potential locations such as Iligan, Zamboanga, General Santos, Leyte, Laoag, Bohol, Legazpi City, and other provinces in Central and Southern Luzon.

“There is so much more untapped potential in areas outside Metro Manila. The Next Wave Cities are part of the solution in terms of providing talent. They are central to expanding economic growth beyond Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Metro Clark. IT-BPO can make a difference in the lives of the people and these opportunities just need to be made known and available to them,” Virata said.

The 10 next-wave cities are Davao, Sta. Rosa in Laguna, Bacolod, Iloilo, Metro Cavite (Bacoor, Imus, and DasmariƱas), Lipa in Batangas, Cagayan de Oro, Malolos in Bulacan, Baguio, and Dumaguete.

The BPAP and Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) identified the next wave cities using a scorecard, the data of which is updated every year.

The NWC Scorecard is a tool to measure the suitability of a location to host IT-BPO operations. Locations are assessed on the basis of availability of talent and relevant infrastructure, connectivity through fiber-optic or other telecommunications networks, accessibility, cost of related factor inputs, and the business environment, including vulnerability to natural disturbances and issues related to security and safety.

Included in the NWC Scorecard are 34 cities and municipalities assessed to be collective “metro” areas.

“The aim of the NWC program is to help ease the inflationary pressures brought about by concentration of recruitment and office space for IT-BPOs within Metro Manila,” Virata said.

He said talent is a key indicator for a location’s potential to become a credible IT-BPO hub. While Metro Manila produces the greatest number of university graduates, 75 percent or over 350,000 annual graduates come from schools outside Metro Manila. These numbers prompted industry stakeholders to take a second look at potential locations outside of Metro Manila and enhance their potential in attracting global clients and foreign investment.

“The IT-BPO industry is aware that the next wave of growth must involve alternative locations,” Virata said.

In 2011, the Philippines’ IT-BPO industry generated more than $11 billion in revenue and employed almost 640,000. Under its roadmap, BPAP projects the industry to grow to $25 billion and employ 1.3 million by 2016.

Facebook interested in buying mobile chat app WhatsApp?

WhatsApp, the maker of a popular cross-platform mobile chat program, has been in talks to be acquired by Facebook, sources tell TechCrunch.

TechCrunch had no information about a possible price range or how advanced the talks might be. CNET has contacted Facebook and WhatsApp for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

Founded in 2009, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company provides a smartphone app for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Symbian, and Windows Phone that delivers text messages as well as images and audio and video messages. The ad-free app reportedly has about 100 million daily users, with a presence in 250 countries on a variety of platforms.

The startup announced in October 2011 that it was serving up 1 billion messages per day: "Just how much is 1 billion messages? That is 41,666,667 messages an hour, 694,444 messages a minute, and 11,574 messages a second," the company wrote in a blog post at the time. The company added that it was a "small step closer towards our goal: providing a great mobile messaging system for a global market, regardless of your handset."

The WhatsApp Messenger app came under criticism recently from security and mobile researchers who alleged security risks based on its authentication process. Several anonymous bloggers called the process a "security nightmare," saying the app leaked data collected off the device when it's being sent to servers. A research paper also concluded that the local database storage encryption could be decrypted.

Apple Unveils iTunes 11 Redesign

The redesigned iTunes that Apple promised in September is finally live. Along with a new "edge-to-edge design" customized for each album, movie or TV show in the user's library, the iTunes 11 upgrade includes a new look for the store and the MiniPlayer, as well as the ability to play music directly from the iCloud.

For most of its span, iTunes has seen little changes and updates here and there. This is the first time that Apple has undertaken a complete reimagining of the most popular media player on the planet. The biggest change is that the left-hand navigation sidebar is now hidden, but it's not completely gone; listeners can still access it by clicking Show Sidebar under View.

Expanded View browsing (similar to what is now known as Cover Flow) places album art front-and-center in this new redesign, so it may look a bit bland if users haven't bother to include album art in the library. Luckily, Apple has already solved this issue by including a Get Album Art feature under the Advanced menu.

Apple also took a few cues from popular music streaming services like Spotify by adding an Up Next feature. With a click of a button, users can see which song will be playing next, as well as reorganize the list of upcoming songs, add new songs or skip songs altogether. The Up Next feature is also available in the MiniPlayer.

Creating playlists in the new iTunes is as simply as dragging and dropping tracks or entire albums. This ease of use also applies to adding songs or other media, like movies and TV shows, to synced-up Apple devices. The synchronization of the Apple devices goes a step further with this upgrade; with playback syncing, iCloud remembers where viewers left off while watching a movie or show, regardless of whether it was watched on the iPhone, the iPad or Apple TV.

The new iTunes Store focuses on simplifying music that listeners may like. Ping, Apple's attempt at a music-based social network, has been replaced with a social recommendation engine in the store. The Store also helps listeners discover new music based on the current contents of their libraries.

The new iTunes 11 is available fo download here.

Canada may bar China from telecoms project

OTTAWA - Canada said Tuesday it had invoked a "national security exception" that could exclude China's Huawei Technologies from a role in helping build its new super secure government network.

Ottawa announced the move after the US House Intelligence Committee on Monday warned in Washington that equipment supplied by two Chinese firms, Huawei Technologies and ZTE Inc., could be used for spying.

"The government is going to be choosing carefully in the building of this network and it has invoked a national security exception," said Andrew MacDougall, spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Ottawa invoked its "national security exception" to trade agreements in the building of its massive data and telecommunications network.

Huawei is already providing high-speed networks for private Canadian firms Bell Canada, Telus, SaskTel, and Wind Mobile.

But Canadian authorities remain wary about the role it might play as the country rebuilds networks damaged by cyber attacks in 2010.

Huawei has rejected the US congressional report as "an exercise in China-bashing." But a former top intelligence official with Canada's spy agency, Ray Boisvert said in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that he agrees with the risks outlined by Washington.

Shared Services Canada -- the ministry tasked with building the government's new network -- also issued a statement saying it "takes cyber security seriously and operates on the advice of security experts."

"Our government has put in place a cyber security strategy designed to defend against electronic threats, hacking and cyber espionage," the ministry said.

The move affects the procurement of consolidated email, telecommunications and data center infrastructure, systems and services for the government.

Should you upgrade to the iPhone 5?

(CNN) -- Deciding when to upgrade is a funny, sometimes expensive thing. Carrier contracts that subsidize the cost of a new iPhone are usually for two years, so it's traditional to upgrade every other model or less. You also want to time it just right, during the iPhone development cycle, so you don't buy a phone months before it's outdated.

If you are an iPhone owner who is pondering an upgrade to the new iPhone 5, here are some things to consider:

Do you long for more screen space/watch a lot of movies?

Perhaps you've heard that the iPhone 5 is taller. This is true. After testing its tallness we've found that there is more space on the screen, which is no longer as short as the previous iPhone screens.

The phone retains its width but is now 9 millimeters taller -- that's one extra row of icons. The dimensions are perfect for watching widescreen movies, which were previously smaller and letter-boxed. The space also gives all other apps a bit more breathing room. Third-party applications must now redesign their apps to fix the new aspect ratio -- which requires time and resources -- so until then, older apps will be shown at normal size, the bar of unused screen space cloaked in mourning-black.

There is a market for much larger smartphone screens, and companies like Samsung have delivered with spacious, high-resolution smartphones. This is largely a matter of preference, but if you find that the iPhone 5's screen is still just too small for you, you may need to defect to something like the Samsung Galaxy S3 which has a 4.8-inch screen.

Does your current phone feel slow?

Each iPhone is typically faster than its predecessor, and phones tend to slow down over time. Apple has added a speedier processor to the iPhone 5 in the form of an A6 chip. The company claims it is up to twice as fast, and after testing, the difference is definitely noticeable.

Holding on to a slightly slower iPhone might not be much of an issue if you primarily use it for common tasks -- calls and texts, e-mailing, Twitter and Facebook, reading, even watching movies. If you don't find yourself grumbling at how slow your phone is, and you're still reeling from the speed improvements over the last iPhone you bought, you can probably carry on blissfully unaware of the difference.

However, if you use your iPhone for bigger tasks like playing graphic games, the speed is a very welcome bump indeed. Another place it's a noticeable improvement is the camera (more on that in a moment).

There are also free steps you can take to try and speed up your current phone. Free up some hard drive space by uninstalling apps you never use, emptying Safari's cache and clearing out photos, videos and music (see exactly what's taking up space in Settings->General->Usage). Make sure you regularly close any apps running in the background.

Is your iPhone your primary camera?

Thanks to decent image quality and the ability to share photos and videos instantly, the iPhone is probably more popular as a camera than a telephoning device. The iPhone 5 has the same 8-megapixel camera sensor as the iPhone 4S, but Apple did make a few hardware tweaks to make it fit into the thinner body and to improve image quality.

The best camera improvement is actually just plain old speed. You can take rapid-fire shots as fast as your finger can tap on the shutter button. Tapping to focus is instant. For anyone who has ever missed a moment because of the iPhone's lagging trigger, this is just awesome.

Apple added a new panorama feature to the Photos app, and while there are numerous third-party panorama apps available, such as Microsoft's Photosynth, the Apple feature manages to beat them at their own game. The stitching is both faster and higher quality than competitors, and the final image is higher resolution.

Other adjustments to the camera include improved low-light images and reduced noise.

Do you use your phone for navigation?

If so, there is a slight caveat.

Every iPhone release comes with its own bit of drama. Sometimes it's overblown, like Antennaga2te, when holding your case-less phone in a very specific position could cause it to drop calls. iPhone 4S users reported battery issues. For the iPhone 5, the issue de jour is its new maps app.

Every iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 pre-installed. That means the old maps app is automatically out, replaced with Apple's first go at a map application. It adds turn-by-turn directions and nice 3D graphics, but drops transit directions and decreases accuracy.

Apple has always excelled at design and smart user interfaces, but it is not a data company. While it continues to work to make this app what it should be, the best solution is to wait for Google to release its own third-party maps app for iOS. (The company is mum on when exactly that will be, but it will probably happen soon.) In the meantime, there are many other map apps in the Apple App Store, and you can still access Google's service through Safari, thought the experience is slower and less intuitive.

Do you like beautiful things?

The most impressive part of the new iPhone is its design. Apple is comparing the level of construction to a "finely crafted watch." Like a luxury item, its design is impeccable, the attention to detail visible on every seam and surface. It also tells time.

Not everyone integrates their iPhone 5 into an outfit like a Rolex. If you are one of the many people who protect their iPhone with an opaque case, the details won't be visible to people around you. In that situation, you still get the satisfaction of a well-made device, but previous iPhones were also finely crafted and are still in perfectly good shape.

The most dramatic physical difference of the new phone is that it is thinner and lighter. But while a great overall improvement, that's not enough of a reason to warrant upgrading unless you find yourself constantly bemoaning how heavy and fat your existing phone is. If you wear skinny jeans, this might be the one upgrade you were waiting for.

Do you have anything older than an iPhone 4S?

If you have an iPhone 3GS or earlier, upgrade. Do it for the screen. The retina display introduced on the iPhone 4 has been further refined for the iPhone 5 and in side-by-side comparisons with all screens at full brightness, the colors do look more vivid on the iPhone 5.

If you have an iPhone 4, the decision is harder. Consider what new features you really need. If you would get a lot of use out of the Siri voice-assistant, for example, this is a good time to upgrade. If you are a hardcore mobile gamer or serious iPhone photographer, the speed is worth it. But if you find that your two-year-old, well-crafted iPhone is holding up nicely, perhaps stick it out for another year.

IPhone 4S owners should just relax and enjoy their current phones. Wait a year for the next iteration, when your carrier will offer you the upgrade at the subsidized price and all the iPhone 5 owners will suddenly be stuck with old technology.

US braces for holiday clash of tech giants

WASHINGTON – It’s beginning to look a lot like a big season in the United States for mobile gadgets.

A major event is the still-rumored launch by Apple in September of a new iPhone, expected to ignite fresh growth in the smartphone market in the US and worldwide.

Apple is also widely expected to unveil a new tablet computer that will be a smaller version of the hot-selling iPad.

But other big tech firms are not sitting idle.

Microsoft is launching its new Surface tablet in late October, and will be pushing hard to sell Windows-powered smartphones. Google has already launched its own branded tablet and smartphone selling alongside other devices powered by its Android system from makers including Samsung.

And many analysts expect Amazon to unveil at least one updated model of its Kindle Fire tablet computer at a news conference September 6.

“This season is going to be exciting,” said Rob Enderle, a technology analyst and consultant with the Enderle Group.

“This is the first time Apple has faced competition on a number of critical fronts. And it’s the first time competition is coming from Google directly.”

Enderle said he expects Microsoft to spend $1 billion on marketing for its new devices and its Windows 8 platform.

“So the conflict in the fourth quarter is going to be legendary,” Enderle said.

“And it’s an election year, so we are going to be awash in ads for voting and ads for buying.”

US consumers appear to be ready to shop.

The Consumer Electronics Association projects record sales of electronics of $206 billion this year, the first time above the $200 billion mark.

Tablet sales along are expected to reach $29.1 billion, up 83 percent, the association said.

“Tablets are the fastest-growing product category in the history of the consumer electronics industry, and sales will continue to increase as more products hit the market,” said Steve Koenig, CEA’s director of industry analysis.

US smartphone sales will total $33.7 billion in 2012, for more than 108 million units, according to the group.

Analyst Colin Gillis at BGC Partners said he sees “feverish” anticipation for the new iPhone, and predicts Apple will sell 10 million of the new phones at the launch and 14 million iPads in the fourth quarter.

Ramon Llamas, an analyst with research firm IDC, said Apple remains the company to watch in the mobile sector because of its rabid customer loyalty and ability to command premium prices.

“Every year when the iPhone is released it should become a national holiday because of all the hype, all the long lines,” he said.

But he said there is strong potential for growth from the new Windows-powered phones expected from Nokia and others.

“I don’t think the platform has been widely evangelized, but I like it,” he said.

Sarah Rotman Epps at Forrester Research said Microsoft has been losing ground by being late to the party, and will cede more customers with its relatively late release of Windows 8 on October 26.

“Every day Windows 8 is not in the market, Microsoft is losing opportunity with consumers,” she said.

She noted that at the start of 2011, Windows was the preferred operating system for consumers but that has slipped as Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS dominate the market for mobile devices.

“Microsoft is rapidly losing mindshare among consumers, but once it hits the market, we do think it will gain traction,” she said.

Jack Gold of the consultancy J. Gold Associates said Samsung, the biggest maker of Android phones also expected to launch Windows-based devices, “is going to continue to be the market leader in smartphones” because of its “huge momentum.”

Gold said the new competitive landscape may be good for consumers, possibly bringing down prices.

“I think there is going to be tremendous pressure on Apple to lower their prices,” he said.

“Apple has the high end of the market but that only works when they have a huge advantage.”

One problem for Apple is that rivals such as Google and Amazon are subsidizing their devices to drive consumers to their content — books, music, film and shopping.

Some analysts say the $200 Kindle Fire and Google Nexus tablets are sold at a loss.

“Apple will have to respond,” Gold said.

Notably absent in the final months of the year will be BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, which delayed its new platform expected to challenge the market leaders until early 2013.

Gold said that “it’s never good to be three or six months late,” although the delay may mean “they won’t have to compete with everyone else and can get visibility.”

Apple stock hits new high on gadget rumors

Apple’s stock price leaped to a new high on Friday amid rumors the tech giant is poised to hit the market with new versions of iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices.

Shares rose nearly two percent to $648.11 by the end of the formal trading day on the Nasdaq exchange, buoyed by a Jefferies investment bank analyst advising clients that the price could climb to $900.

The share price inched up to $648.85 in after-market trading.

The arrival of the iPhone 5 “will be the biggest handset launch in history,” Jefferies investment bank analyst Peter Misek said in a note raising the target price for Apple stock and giving it a ‘buy’ rating.

Jefferies reasoned that Apple is positioned to take a significant portion of the profit to be generated by hot trends in smartphones, tablet computers, and gadgets linking to the Internet on latest-generation 4G networks.

The Internet has been abuzz with unconfirmed reports that Apple will introduce a new iPhone, perhaps with a larger screen, at a press event in September.

The Cupertino, California-based company is also believed to be readying a smaller version of its market-ruling iPad and a revamped Apple TV box, referred to unofficially as “iTV,” that routes video or programming to televisions.

“We believe the iTV is in full production,” Misek said.

Jefferies raised its forecast for iPad sales from 18 million to 25 million for the third quarter and from 22-25 million to 30 million for the final three months of this year.

Friday’s surge in Apple’s stock price demonstrated the powerful expectations for the next generation of gadgets from the culture-changing company, according to Wedbush Securities managing director of equities trading Michael James.

Investors also see promise in hot new Apple gadgets hitting the market in time for the year-end holiday shopping seasons, when the company’s products typically shine, James added.

Apple has the largest market capitalization in the United States, with its stock giving it a value of about $602.25 billion.

Software developer shares Bloomberg’s vision for digital NYC

Want to know how many people visit the Rockefeller Center every year or every hour? Maybe you’re curious about New York’s youngest, wealthiest mayors. And just who are the Canarsies?

NYCFacets, an application that will put New York City at your fingertips, is nearing completion and scheduled to launch in October. It was created by software developer and Paranaque native Joel Natividad, 44, and his business partner Sami Baig. The app won grand prize at the recent New York City’s Big Apps 3.0 contest for the functionality of “using city data to make New York better.”

The way Joel explained it to The FilAm, NYCFacets is “data-driven web like Wikipedia, but instead of several (newspaper) articles coming up when you do a search, you get data.” NYCFacets is the initial product of Ontodia.com, the startup that Joel and Sami founded, and one of about 10 companies that are part of Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s “incubator program” likened by The New York Times to Silicon Valley.

The incubator program is for aspiring entrepreneurs, said Joel. “The idea many startups don’t make it is because they don’t have the experience, the right connections, the funding, and what this incubator does is they incubate you for two years, give you support, access to employers and investors and make sure you have a good start.”

Joel’s start had been better than most. He came to the U.S. at age 21 with a degree in computer science from La Salle. He was reluctant to emigrate, he said, telling his mother he didn’t want to be a “second-class citizen” in America.

After three months, he found work at a management systems company that developed and maintained software for all kinds of laboratories. That company would soon file for bankruptcy, and Joel found himself working for the hedge fund that took over its operations. Joel stayed there for about 20 years.

When he joined the New York City’s Big Apps contest in 2010, his company was not very supportive, so he left and founded Ontodia.com. With an office on Varick Street, Ontodia now has three fulltime people, including Joel and Sami as officers. Ontodia shares a vision with Bloomberg to develop New York into a Digital City.

Joel referred to his concept as “semantic web.” When you search, say, “cheap Vegas hotel” the search brings up multiple choices. With semantic web’s precision and specificity, the search will limit the choices to the right hotel such that “instead of searching,” he said, “you will be knowing.”

Joel finds Bloomberg an inspiring technology leader. He is the “original data geek,” he said, crediting Bloomberg’s company for organizing all data about finance until it became the financial information behemoth it is today. “What Bloomberg did for finance, we want to do for open data, a concept for all government movements that want to modernize government,” he said.

Part of Joel’s fascination with the city and its mayor stems from how he grew up. He is a child of civil servants. His parents were long-time employees of Manila’s City Hall and supported themselves through college. His father served from the time of Mayor Antonio Villegas in the 1960s to Mayor Lito Atienza in the 1990s, retiring as the city personnel officer. His mother worked for many years in the business permits bureau.

One of his “frustrations” is not seeing as many Filipinos in the area of tech startups.
“I see in the startup field not as many Filipinos as I would like to see,” said Joel, father of 4-year-old Olivia. His wife Maya is a registered nurse at the Hackensack University Medical Center. “But I see a lot of South Asians.”

Here’s a fun fact about Joel: He’s not on Facebook.

Microsoft finally Surfaces in tablet market

After seeming to have tabled its tablet dreams, ceding the market to Apple and Google, Microsoft has surfaced, literally. It has announced its entry into the mobile market -- the Surface. But tucked away below the surface were unannounced details such as price and battery life.

What we did learn was that the Surface comes in two different flavors -- for Windows RT and for Windows Pro. The RT version is in both 32-gigabyte and 64-gigabyte orientations.

Some of the distinctive features of the 9.3-millimeter Surface is its magnesium case with a 10.6-inch Gorilla Glass display. On the back, a kickstand is integrated, breaking up the seamless lines just a bit. The Wi-Fi-enabled Surface weighs in at 1.5 pounds, which is a hair heavier than the iPad (1.44 pounds). It also connects via USB 2.

The tablet, complete with Office, is touted as fully-functional as a Windows desktop, with specs that rival many ultrabooks on the market today, including the latest Intel CPU. Surface has the standard front and rear cameras.

"It was important that the Windows software could rise to the surface," said Panos Panay, the products' designer.

The screen features digitizers for both touch and digital ink, and the pen magnetically tucks away into the top of the tablet.

Something that is reminiscent but with a twist are the magnetic smart covers to go with the Surface tablets. The covers appear very similar in basic function to Apple's smart covers, but the twist comes with a virtual keyboard on the Touch Cover and a tactile keyboard on the Type Cover.

As names go, it's not something that immediately triggers that gotta-have-it reaction, but then neither did iPad initially.

Microsoft said it focused on details as intricate as the sound of the kickstand. "We really wanted to get the sound right, so you get that visceral feeling, that emotional attachment," said Panos.

The question remains how the public will receive this late entry.

"It's a bold challenge against Apple, but a lot will depend on the details of price, battery life, ecosystem," said Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg. "It will be interesting to see how their licensees react when they discover they are competing with Microsoft as well as Apple."

Google launches cultural map of Brazil’s Amazon tribe

RIO DE JANEIRO – Google on Saturday unveiled a cultural map of Brazil’s Surui indigenous people, a digital tool that will help the Amazonian tribe share their vast knowledge of the forest and fight illegal logging.

The map, the result of a five-year partnership between Surui chief Almir and the US technology giant, was released online for the first time at a business forum held on the sidelines of the UN Rio+20 conference on sustainable development here.

The map, a collection of pictures and videos mapping historical sites and offering 3-D visualization of Surui territory in the northwestern Brazilian state of Rondonia, is available on the site www.paiter.org as well as on Google Earth.

Donning a multi-colored feather headdress, chief Almir hailed the project that “shows the value of our culture to the world through Google.”

Almir, who proposed the idea of the map to Google during a visit to the United States five years ago, told a press conference that he was particularly proud of the contribution Surui youths made to the project, including narration.

“We really believe that this is ground-breaking, ground-breaking for Google,” said Rebecca Moore, Google Earth Outreach leader. “The Surui people and Google worked together to bring the story of the forest to the global community.”

Almir said his 1,300-strong tribe plans to use the map as well as Android smartphones provided by Google to monitor and denounce illegal logging around its territory.

Moore said that by developing the map Google now had a methodology that can be used to help other indigenous peoples around the world, including in Canada and New Zealand.

Almir said his goal was to raise awareness of the need for a sustainable use of the forests.

“We understand the forest, Google understands the technology and we have established a partnership for the good of the forest,” he said.

Facebook releases mobile camera app after IPO flop

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook released a “camera” application Thursday that lets people take Instagram-style pictures that can be shared with iPhones.

The stand-alone application synchs to the leading social network, letting friends consult one another’s photos.

The new mobile app “makes using Facebook photos faster and easier,” according to product manager Dirk Stoop.

“You’ll see a feed of great photos from the people you care about,” Stoop said in a Facebook post. “You can swipe to see more of any album or tap to enlarge an individual photo.”

The mini-program also let people share many pictures simultaneously instead of having to post them one at a time to the social network, according to Stoop.

Facebook Camera was due to be available at Apple’s online App Store late Thursday.

The Menlo Park, California-based social network made a billion-dollar deal in April to buy the startup behind wildly popular smartphone photo sharing application Instagram.

The big ticket purchase was seen by some as a move by Facebook to strengthen defenses against Google and blazingly hot newcomer Pinterest.

“For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family,” Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said in announcing the deal.

“Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.”

An Instagram application tuned to Apple’s iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices has been downloaded more than 30 million times since the first version was released in late 2010 by the San Francisco startup.

A version of the application tailored for smartphones powered by Google-backed Android software racked up more than a million users in the 24 hours after its recent release.

Word of Facebook Camera came in the aftermath of an initial public offering of stock that made insiders and investors rich but left small buyers of shares feeling abused.

Lack of a clear strategy for making money from users who connect to the social network using smartphones or tablet computers was considered to be among the reasons Facebook stock sank below its opening price of $38 per share.

Facebook stock reversed its losing trend on Thursday, inching up to $33.03 a share from $31.99 a day earlier after the close of trading on the Nasdaq exchange.

More than a half-dozen law firms specializing in investor complaints said this week that they were launching class action suits against the social networking giant and its underwriters.

The suits alleged that Facebook, along with Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and other big Wall Street banks that distributed the shares withheld from smaller investors crucial forecasts that pointed to weaker growth for Facebook, while sharing the information with big institutional clients.

A separate lawsuit against the Nasdaq exchange said its massive technical problems on the first day of Facebook trade on Friday also resulted in losses to investors.

All told, the claims could come to billions: more than $15 billion have been wiped from the company’s value since the initial public offering gave it a market capitalization of $104 billion.

Computer glitch forces BI to check passports manually for 9 hours

MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Immigration computer system at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 1 encountered systems failure, interrupting services for both arriving and departing passengers at the terminal.

The computer glitch caused long lines of anxious, angry passengers at the immigration arrival and departure area, affecting more than 25 flights from 2 pm to 11 pm of Monday. Among the flights were those on eight wide-body aircraft coming mostly from the Middle East during the peak hours.

The Bureau of Immigration had to put up additional counters to accommodate the volume of passports being processed manually and deployed more personnel to ease the backlog.

The disruption of immigration services was only the latest in a series of problems at the country’s premier airport, where congestion and the air-traffic controllers’ nightmare of shorter separations between flights, were recently reported.
